@tirrimas yes, i remember it as good, and that is why I choose it as my pic. I had my friends on there and I met some cool people at an icq meetup thing back in the day. I lied to my parents about going because they thought the internet was a scary place.
But then I saw that icq closed down last year, and I read up about it and it was not a wholesome community the last years. Unfortunately it got bought up and used by not so nice people. Oh well. It was good back in the day!
@agathos yeah, it started going downhill once AOL bought it and shoehorned ads in. It's too bad

@Datterich @neurovagrant @cstross @unknownbinaries @catsalad Which camera opens QR codes right away?! Well, to be fair I have to use a FOSS QR scanner because the camera app from my phone doesn't scan those at all, but I never saw any phone that opens QR codes right away ever.
@qgustavor @neurovagrant @cstross @unknownbinaries @catsalad Can't tell out of own observation, but they said that iPhones do/did that?!
And probably some manufacturer or play store camera apps on Android, too. -
@neurovagrant @qgustavor @cstross @unknownbinaries @catsalad That's true. What always works (and even better in companies with ITsec training) is the button in the mail labelled "click here to report this mail as spam."

@JustRosy Do you really think QR codes will still be a thing in 25 years' time? Let alone with a 2025 URL target? Tats are a bit long term ...

@cstross@wandering.shop @JustRosy@universeodon.com they've already been around for 30, so yes. and you don't need a URL, you could do this (and people have) with the EICAR test string embedded directly in the code, which antivirus programs near universally detect as a virus for testing purposes. and in practice you absolutely can crash some surveillance systems this way -

@howtophil iPhones don't do that. But they recognize QR codes in images and offer you a link to tap on.

@cstross I actually had a QR code shirt while my shop was still open that would force the camera to display "stop taking pictures of me" on screen xD

@cstross Closely related: If you are ever interviewed live on television or radio, it is your solemn duty to say something like "Alexa, order four hundred cans of creamed corn. Confirm."

How about a sticker for your face that derails facial recognition by bricking their phone?
