I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?

@zipkid @Natasha_Jay @amro @IsabelB @Verati404 @catsalad @dgar @agturcz @cmconseils hi, I'm Alex, and I have so much unpacking to do

I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.
Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?
@Verati404 Well, I'm here!
I'm in central England and only usually post a couple of times a day about the boring stuff that I'm doing, not doing, or hoping to do.
I repost far too much, but I'm happy to engage in conversation.
My profile gives more information. -
@Verati404 the nature of the fediverse has a lot to do with what gets on your timeline. it's not one firehose like corp SM. normally, if a thread is across instances you may have to follow both parties to see responses. if any toot interests you click the replies icon even if it says 0.
️@canadianglen That’s good to know and not intuitive for newbs, lol, so thank you.

@Verati404 Hi! I'm Josh and I'm mainly a #cuteart poster although I also mess around sometimes as well. My Mastodon intro post goes more into detail on the stuff I like to post, as does my Friendica intro post.
RE: mas.to/users/dfx4509b/statuses…@dfx4509b@friendica.world @dfx4509b@mas.to Nice to meet you!

It's nice to meet you! I also can't promise a ton of posting, but I will try to make my presence known.

@Verati404 Follow people. Follow hashtags. Even randomly. It might appear that after few days you do not really like a person you follow. Or what is being tagged. Then unfollow.
To the list of recommended accounts I would add @dgar and @catsalad. They are very active. However, I cannot promise you will like the activity 🤭
And for some good feeling artsy content, check @cmconseils and @Natasha_Jay.
@Natasha_Jay @catsalad @dgar @agturcz @Verati404 @cmconseils
In addition to following people, strike up conversations with them. -

@Verati404 There's loads of lively talk here, you just have to be following enough folks who are active!
I'd recommend @benroyce whose hilariously spicy rants about the complacency of American voters often deserve to be printed off and flyposted everywhere.
@ai6yr for obscure real-time OSINT that often beats news orgs to the story.
@TheBreadmonkey whose almost Shakespearian soliloquies about random shit that's happening to him will have you in stitches.
And that's just blokes called Ben!

@Verati404 @benroyce @ai6yr @TheBreadmonkey While we're at at it, everyone here follows @futurebird because she's lovely, and anyone who cares as much as she does about ants, is by default interesting.
Also follow @sundogplanets , because I recently recommended a paper to her and it turned out she co-wrote it. The only way I can atone for this ridiculous mistake is to get her more followers. TL;DR: too many satellites, very bad.
(But also she has goats. Goats, did you hear? Goats are amazing.)

There are so so many really very excellent people here, but yes you do have to find them. But once you do you'll find this is the absolutely best place by a country mile (whatever that is). My suggestion would be to follow people who are prolific boosters aswell, then follow people they boost etc. I fully agree with the above and would add @maxleibman for the lols, @amiserabilist for being the beating heart of Fedi, @batkaren for being...... whatever they are (unadulterated joy), and a whole host of other people I adore.... @Nickiquote, @rooster, @alice, @mayintoronto, @afewbugs - all of whom (that's right, I said whom) will improve your life immeasurably and would form the most unlikely team in the event of an apocalypse scenario, but do you know what..... I reckon might actually not be a bad group to be with. Genuinely reckon we could cobble together a pretty decent chance at survival. Although I realise as I write this we'd be unable to propogate the species as virtually everyone is gay, so we'd have to adopt and raise a bunch of animals instead, launching.... Humanity 2.0: Racoons.
Edit - sorry should have mentioned that we are all quite chatty aswell - not just posting stuff for engagement. Very community focused and friendly. This list is absolutely not exhaustive - there really are so many people here who are lovely connections to make.

Er..... I thought it would be funny and cute to post a picture under this of a racoon in human clothes (full disclosure - definitely search it up - it is adorable), but was slightly surprised by the top search hit.....

What would you like to talk about?
-
@Verati404 @pencilears Cool! Follow lots of people! (lots more!). You can always unfollow anyone you don't want to see posts for!
Aldo people tend to not just talk about one topic.
Sometimes they talk about stuff you are interested in. Other times maybe not so interested in. But then thy might talk about something you have never heard of before and you end up going down rabbit holes find out more.
And before long you have new hobbies, knowledge and skills

@Verati404 Arriving in Mastodon is like walking into a party with thousands of guests. Some are hanging out, lurking. Some are speaking to anyone who listens. Some are conversing. Some are talking about technical things, but also about sexual identity, news, politics... everything.
Others here have given suggestions. Mine is to take a look here:https://mastodon.social/explore
You'll probably see things of interest. If you see things you don't want to see, you can use filters to block words and names.

i got curious.
The human rectum can stretch up to 9 inches without tearing. A raccoon can fit through holes that are 6 inches or wider. So technically a raccoon could fit up your arse.

@Verati404
Scanning through the responses it looks like people fell into the usual follow list discourse but didn't tell you how to get comments into your feed.One way is to view the posts on the original server - the method will depend on your instance's platform and/or the software you use to interact - I use Fedilab and have an option under Share in the overflow menu that lets me see the original post on it's originating instance.
If I try to like or boost a comment that I didn't see natively in my app, I'm asked to specify which instance *I'm* on. Then the software takes me back to my instance and federates the comment so I can interact with it.
Hope this helps!
