So which VPN are we switching to?
-
@gildilinie
I'm currently using Surfshark VPN.
What terrible things have they done that I don't yet know about?
Asking for my insecurity.
#VPN #VPNComparison@Guillotine_Jones let me update my op
-
@gildilinie sticking openvpn on a cheap disposable VPS is starting to sound like a good idea
@patterfloof that seems to be basically what njalla provides as well. However, it's not what I'm looking for as I'd like to be able to country hop
-
@gildilinie ok I'll look around, I'm prepared to be disappointed at this point
-
@sharpcheddargoblin under a "sonic the hedgehog framework" proton seems the best
-
So which VPN are we switching to?
mullvad: fash
Mozilla: resells mullvad
nym: fash
ExpressVPN/PIA: israeli military guys
Windscribe: openly transphobic on Twitter (someone here linked it), also sent out a newsletter with homophobic rape jokes like just the other day
ivpn: freeze peach https://mastodon.art/@jase/116830652868816205
proton: turned over logs on someone, one of the c-suite donated to Trump
surfshark/nordvpn: same company, owned by an SEO/marketing outfit
purevpn: sketchy af floods play store with different vpn brands, security problem
tortorguard.net: Cloudflare (the nazi proxi)
obscura: partnered with mullvadriseup: runs on donations
njalla: only one connection / no selection of exits / seems like a vps basically. Probably great if you want one fixed ip, won't work if you want to hop servers/regions
airvpn: ?
hide.me: ? did an NFT in 2022
xeoveo: says trans rights, oppose facism@gildilinie So there are basically no VPNs. cool cool cool cool
-
@gildilinie The Proton thing really shows that just being in Switzerland isn't a security model
-
@gildilinie So there are basically no VPNs. cool cool cool cool
@gatrnerd there's a bunch where we just don't really have much info on
-
@alexia@shrimp.starlightnet.work @gildilinie@beige.party @robinsyl@meow.social yeah, they arent, after a bill switzerland passed which allowed surveillance or smth similar
-
@duxsco @gildilinie
Thank YOU, David, for providing this extremely revealing link to VPN provider relationships. -
@dvshkn i think hide.me, airvpn, and obscura could still be in the running
-
@dvshkn will be interesting to see if/how they respond to the latest revelations

-
@fluffy you like hide.me ?
@gildilinie @fluffy my few qualms with it honestly is well the company name eVenture, that doesn't sound very inviting nor does it sound inviting all the buzz word best vpn fastest in the world and so on. It seems a decent option besides that if there's good news about them, just I don't like all the buzz words and what a company name

@gildilinie @jase yeah the company name is super generic, but I've been happy with the VPN itself.
-
@passocacornio they do accept doge but I feel like that's kinda par for the course...

xeoveo: says trans rights, oppose facism@gildilinie IIRC Proton only turned over email data (which they kinda have to store being an email service, given email is inherently insecure), not VPN logs (which they don't store apparently). the trump donation is disappointing though.
Heard rumours that AirVPN is linked to organised crime but that could just be racism given they are Italian.
Cryptostorm might be an option, not heard much about them but they seem decent. -
@gildilinie and the amount of new .social accounts advertising their very not sus VPNs lol

The mafia might break your legs for trying to stiff them, but they /probably/ aren't gonna come break your legs for getting off to The Wrong Kind Of Porn halfway around the planet
