I’ve been a long-time Kubuntu user, currently on 26.04 LTS.
Mostly because I want Debian-ish stability, KDE, reasonably current software, and something that will happily run on moderately elderly hardware without demanding a blood sacrifice to the upgrade gods.
And I increasingly want to escape the Canonical Slop
.So I’ve been thinking: Debian Testing?
Except then I went looking into Debian’s current position on generative AI and -
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, DEBIAN?
So apparently Debian is having an enormous philosophical argument about whether the robot should be allowed into the kitchen while I am standing outside trying to find an operating system that doesn't make me want to scream.
Which leaves me with the obvious question:
If I want KDE, stability, reasonably current packages, decent support for older hardware, no Canonical nonsense, AND a Free Software project that is taking the whole GenAI mess seriously… WHAT THE FUCK DO I RUN?
Debian Testing was looking so promising, too.
Linux distro hopping has become a personality crisis.

@thepurpleoctopus IMHO you should use Slackware Linux, it is the most Unix like GNU/Linux distro, it does not ship with systemd so it runs extremely well in older hardware.

@splashgarden that, and also the reality that GenAI is unethical by design. For its training and development, human made content was used without consent or compensation. And now it's literally destroying jobs, often enough the jobs of the people it also stole the content from.

Debian stable and flatpack for the three programs you actually need bleeding edge.
Also ubtubu has a lot of packages that are actually older then debian stable for a part of the live circle. I once switched to debian stable long ago to get the newer program I needed

@AlexInBlue Playing Dwarf Fortress on pen and paper might be quite an effort, that said. Or perhaps a challenge...
But yes, seriously. It shouldn't be do hard just to do your everyday computing without GenAI.
