“Democracy has been hailed as, like, the holy grail for the last couple hundred years, but democracies are inefficient,” said the crypto billionaire. “If you get a benevolent dictator, it’s actually extremely efficient."

Hmm, where have I heard this before?

It’s not just one billionaire. It’s a full-blown cult of billionaires who believe dictatorship should replace democracy—and that technology (crypto and AI) will make this inevitable.

@gilduran What makes anyone think that the goal of government should be efficiency?

When I was a teenager, I hit upon the idea that if I could buy records directly from the label, they would be cheaper because it would bypass the "middlemen" who each added a markup to the price. My father asked me "What makes you think the economy should be efficient? What would the middlemen do to earn a living?"

      A benevolent dictator...
      Isn't that an #oxymoron?

This is a very good story. Yet it's amazing to see the New York Times continually miss the forest for the trees.

The NYT is ok with extremist ideology as an anecdote in a profile—but highly allergic to any deeper examination of the ideology itself.

No one gets to write an op-ed explaining any of this. That’s not allowed. But a billionaire can drop it in a quote as a passing comment.

Of course, I just wrote a book about it!

On my hold list at my local library. It seems to be a wildly popular book judging by how long that I have been waiting. I'm looking forward to reading it.

@gilduran Loved the book (even if it is frightening), great work. Reading End Times Fascism now and also trying to research those movements, people and influences you mentioned. Telling everyone I know to read your book and also trying to find ways to shine a light on the people, relationships and beliefs of those involved.

They want a Star Trek universe that they control. Which makes me question if they've seen even a single episode of the show.

@gilduran i would say the key word here in #benevolent . a big assumption. maybe easier to just be a "billie," nevermind that ... what was that first word again..?
