Amsterdam murder rate: extremely low
Amsterdam drunk man attempts to relieve himself into canal, falls in, hits his head and drowns rate: extremely high
Plan your tourism accordingly.
This is not a joke, this is literally true. Amsterdam is probably the only place that has ever built more public toilets with the specific aim of reducing deaths by drowning.
@0xabad1dea I did notice the large number of urinals in the centre, that's a great bit of policy.

@0xabad1dea Soon after I arrived in Amsterdam I asked a colleague, "Why are there no railings along the canals? Don't people fall in and die?" and he was like "Oh yes, about 20 tourists fall in and drown every year"

@0xabad1dea we have our own version of this in Spain, it's drunk brits and germans falling to their doom off of balconies, trying to land in the pool (aka balconing). We do have a leaderboard, tho!

@jmopp it's a natural way to control the tourist population

@0xabad1dea In the last decade gemeente amsterdam has removed so many plaskrul and replaced them with antihomeless benches and slippering stone slabs. Not to mention the push to condense the red light to a smaller area, thus increasing the tourist dying in canal.

https://www.balcon.ing/Official British Governmental Advice:
Falls from height
There have been a number of serious accidents, some fatal, involving British nationals falling from height, including from balconies.
Do not take unnecessary risks around balconies or other high places, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs. If you are staying in a room with a balcony, follow the safety advice at the hotel or apartment, and watch out for friends who may be at risk.
In some regions you may be fined or evicted from your hotel if you are found to be behaving irresponsibly around balconies. Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when the incident happened.

@lil5 @0xabad1dea as much as I want to support their attempts to have more tourists drown in the canals, I find this a horrible way to go about it /j

@kuriko @Alonely0 @0xabad1dea Such a travel advisory would be even funnier if it were about Russia and similar regimes..

@jmopp @0xabad1dea why oh why is there no railing
@navi @jmopp the canals are, historically speaking, the streets. It's harder to use them that way these days because of all the tour boats, but they are completely public and meant to be used.
Probably there should be a few more railings, but keep in mind, most of them are quite shallow and hard to drown in, and during the day you WILL be spotted if you fall in. It's very specifically drunk men dicking around at 2 am who are most of the fatalities.

@0xabad1dea @navi @jmopp "dicking around"… I see what you did there.

@0xabad1dea @navi At some point I would love to try kayaking to the office. Or at least as far as I can before I run into actual marine traffic

@navi @jmopp @0xabad1dea Same reason you don't have railing on public streets. People want to park their boats and get out.
