If you use and particularly, pay for anything they make, you need to read this. It’s one of the worst I’ve seen even in the 20s.
🫠 I don’t think they’re recovering without the board removing executive leadership. https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/
@hacks4pancakes I'm so glad I left a few months ago. It just got to the point where it became impossible to ignore the growing list of problems
-
after not doing enough research I moved my email to proton a couple of months ago . . . fuck!
@cgsines @hacks4pancakes there were some red flags before, like Andy's praise of JD Vance and the trump admin a couple years back, but they did a rough apology that allowed some face saving.
Seems like in the last couple of years he has gone gone full meltdown, likely from his silicon valley pals.
The bullshit about "perception is more important than truth" and his desire for the company to flip to a "996" culture (9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) means its sick to its core. The raw disrespect of "thats loser talk" to his devs about actually testing AI is just the fuckest of fuck yous that I'm sure resonates real well with his core customer base, software engineers.
-
@hacks4pancakes It’s so fucking disheartening and deflating when trying to reshape my tech footprint into something more moral and ethical. It seems to be getting harder with each passing hour
@continuity0 @hacks4pancakes I did a complete overhaul last year, changed almost everything in my setup for, indeed, moral and ethical reasons. Also wanting to support businesses here at home (Europe). It took a lot of determination, relearning and frustration, some of it ongoing.
Linux, Libre Office and Proton have played key parts in this transition. All have faced issues recently. Right now I'm not even sure it was worth it.I'm genuinely at a loss and looking at the larger issue - none of this is stuff we should have to worry about - I am beyond angry.
-
@winterknight1337 @hacks4pancakes in the balls, right??? or the other sacked?
-
@Cotopaxi ditto. Where to go for email and stuff that isn't toxic? Also, I'll need to tell everyone that it's not @proton anymore just like I had to with Gmail and hotmail. Shoulda got my own domain years ago...
@hacks4pancakes@Niall @Cotopaxi @hacks4pancakes mailbox.org is getting some good noise over in the Reddit thread about this. Tuta is also an option, but they also use ai coding apparently, although likely not as shithouse as proton does.
-
@hacks4pancakes Andy yen needs to be sacked asap
@winterknight1337 @hacks4pancakes
How’s the record for companies firing wacky CEOs? What does that tell us about boards of directors members?
Yeesh, what a world.

@hacks4pancakes This really sucks. I've been moving away from Google services as much as possible and purchased a subscription for Proton Unlimited back in March. Guess I need to start looking for alternatives. I have a couple custom domains. Been using Proton Drive for my photo backups from my GrapheneOS Pixel. Use calendar app. Not much else. Any recommended alternatives that are privacy friendly, no AI BS, etc?
@mrclark @hacks4pancakes The Proton-Boss is afraid of Tuta. And Wikipedia says that Tuta by is banned in Russia and Egypt, so they seem to be doing something right.

@hacks4pancakes at least they were kind enough to do it before my unlimited sub renews lmao

@cgsines @hacks4pancakes The email part isn't even the worst for me. I finally managed to get the family to use a password manager, we each have our own vault, there is one for the wife and me for shared stuff and there is another one for all of us that has everything we also need on the kids' device.
I personally don't mind KeePass but for sharing with non-technical people it's a pain. -

@hacks4pancakes I had written them off when I heard about the CEO being 'anti-woke' (aka pro-fash), that must have been 1 or 2 years ago. Seems I was right.

@hacks4pancakes
If you just need a secure email, why not try Tuta? [1] The mobile app is not as flashy as Proton's but it works and I've been quite happy with it.I believe they have a rather strict no-AI stance too.
Also the paid plan lets you create 15(?) different emails pointing to the same inbox. It's pretty useful when you don't want to use the same emal everywhere.

@hacks4pancakes It's one thing to fully embrace AI (which on its own is already disappointing). But disregarding any and all concerns about quality or security of the product just for the sake of AI is going full Elon.
The toxic leadership culture on top of that is no surprise to me now. Can't wait for the men coming out with the defense that "without strong leadership, you can't innovate".
-
I really hope they remove him and put in someone sane. He has been nothing but trouble for years. It's really unfair for the company to have to put out the fires he causes every single year.
@aphantastic @hacks4pancakes I've witnessed that sort of behavior from CEOs before, firsthand. You can feel the toxins in the air when you walk around the offices. And they surround themselves with enablers, each of whom has their own particular brand of toxic behavior.

@hacks4pancakes If you're not using AI to endlessly pentest your software (especially privacy-preserving software), your opps are 100% doing it and you're ngmi

@hacks4pancakes who owns the company, do you know? Looks like they need to replace the board in a hurry to save it.

Aaaww fuck not them too?!Although I think I'll wait a bit to see what comes out of this. They seem to be pretty forthcoming about their business, so I'm expecting an update on this from their side.
@hacks4pancakes -
@hacks4pancakes fuck this ceo, like with a rusty pole.
“Perception is more important than truth, the truth doesn’t matter if you don’t win on perception.” - CEO of proton
nice.
@tootbrute @hacks4pancakes the CEO was pro trump two years ago, this quote really epitomizes that
-
But thinking about it, the red flags were there.
@hacks4pancakes Not to toot *giggle* my own horn, but when I decided to de-Google two years ago, I did in fact consider the then-known, ahem, attitudes of the Proton CEO to be red flags & that's why I decided not to go with Proton, by far the most obvious option at the time.
When people tell us who they are, we should believe them & when a company is run by a person with questionable positions and/or ethics, we should assume that this is what the company stands for. Because it always is.
