    Students who don’t use AI are ahead on every measure

    @davidgerard "you don't want to be left behind, do you?" being the AI booster taunt makes this extra funny

      @davidgerard

      Some MIT professor was like "go ahead, use AI, it'll help you learn computer science and this class!" but he described it as building blocks on building blocks. Unfortunately, if you use the Easy Button, you don't learn anything, so by the time the next block came by you were already one block behind knowledge-wise. It felt like the professor was encouraging his students to fail and be left behind, gleefully.

        @davidgerard My daughter (15) refuses to use it and thinks it should be banned.

        They had an art assignment to use AI and the class refused, making art like AI instead.

        I hope someone threw in extra fingers. 🤣🤣🤣

        As far as I’m concerned, she’s a genius. 💕🙃

          If OECD is trying to "both sides" this topic, then they are following the rules of AI Fight Club: Never suggest not using AI.

              @davidgerard @zzt first of all i believe it is important to state that the OECD itself recognises that these results can't establish causality. secondly it needs to be said that the headline is not only misleading but rejects truth. see this plot from page 140 of the report. OECD puts it like this

              > those who reported using AI to help them learn frequently […] tend to slightly outperform their peers

              i believe unreflected criticism it to be dangerous and unhealthy

                    @feliks @davidgerard why didn’t you post the entire paragraph

                    > How AI use relates to student performance is complex, varying with how students use it and what for. PISA data show that students who use AI for specific schoolwork tasks, such as summarising texts, drafting or conducting research, attain lower scores in science than students who do not use AI. In these scenarios, students who do not use AI outperform those who do, on average, by around 20 points – equivalent to being around one year of schooling ahead of their peers. However, weekly users of AI for general purposes have similar performance outcomes to non-users. Students who regularly use AI for general purposes, and have learning opportunities at school to develop AI literacy skills, tend to have slightly higher scores in science. However, these opportunities are more common among socio-economically advantaged students, risking a growing AI divide.

                    this says that rich students do better

                                    Some MIT professor was like "go ahead, use AI, it'll help you learn computer science and this class!" but he described it as building blocks on building blocks. Unfortunately, if you use the Easy Button, you don't learn anything, so by the time the next block came by you were already one block behind knowledge-wise. It felt like the professor was encouraging his students to fail and be left behind, gleefully.

                                      @davidgerard why do you even give in to them. Ignore them. You know you do your research and some stupid Youtube comments are unlikely to give you any constructive criticism worth listening to.

                                        @davidgerard yeaa, but that's effort and I don't think they are worth even that much.

                                          @akamran @Muddobbers @davidgerard i see your point. i believe it is important to split ressource requirements and bad policies. at industrial scale this could all be less of a problem if energy was created more sustainably. on a personal scale it is relatively small as it consumes less power than a gaming PC (given normal usage patterns)

                                          it is important where data centers are built and how they are powered and cooled. i believe it is important to regulate towards public benefit
