@cstross people think I am paranoid for not wanting to scan a QR code out in public, ever. gas stations, restaurants, whatever. how easy it is for someone with bad intentions to just place a sticker over the good one. I'll pass.

      We need stickers!

      What do I say - posters, billboard-sized!

Imagine one of the G00gle cars drive by, scanning for Street View, wifis, and... Gemini?

PS: Thanks, @catsalad, for looking up the old thread. I'm not good at that... How are you so organized?

@cstross "What Happened at Cambridge IV" by David Langford is one of my favourite short stories ever (and I've got it in an anthology with Terry Pratchett's "ifdefDEBUG + ‘world/enough’ + ‘time’", which is another absolute belter).

@cstross I had a whole-ass sci-fi novel idea sketched out around this concept once (but then I think I figured out somebody actually wrote it? Gibson?)

@cstross the EICAR code as barcode or qrcode used to break a lot of automatized systems.

@neurovagrant @trainguyrom @anotherdaniel @cstross @unknownbinaries I am not saying that a huge grocery store chain in norway is vulnerable to this "attack" in their self service tills, I would not know anything about that, no need to ask any further questions

@cstross That's great. But with my luck, I will be using Seeing AI to read something printed near me or to describe the scenery and I'll accidentally scan such a shirt!

@duckyd @cstross Yes, exactly! Why would I want to take my browser to a URL which is not only unknown, but unknowable? I avoid URL shorteners likewise.
Not knowing where the URL goes is like taking a blind leap off a cliff.

@kerravonsen @duckyd @cstross Especially what I call a "naked" link - just a link in a toot, no page title, nothing said about what it's about, or why I might want to visit it. That always makes a link sound like a phishing/malicious link!

@cstross I would pick anti-counterfeit markers like the EURion constellation (you'll need more than that, EURion alone doesn't trigger the alert) instead …

@mbirth @cstross We tried. To no avail. Will have to try another iteration with an endless pattern fabric/print. So it is presented in multiple and different orientations.

@nblr @mbirth @cstross As far as I know, a single anti-counterfeit pattern won't trigger the alert. Same goes for repetitions of said pattern. You need at least one *different* pattern in addition to the EURion(s) to trigger it.
