    Here's my first Mastodon post!
My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?

    Two attractive things IMO:

"channels" of practical information. My city has Fediverse announcements of power and water outages (planned or emergencies), wastewater disease tracking, other stuff it's just handy to see. More time-sensitive than a webpage, less time-sensitive than emergencies or transit outages (I get those over SMS).

Ideally useful info, not just press releases; and really ideally someplace a citizen can report trouble

      @midzer
Imagine I'm preparing a workshop for people who want to understand and join Mastodon.
What could you tell people to make Mastodon look like a fun place to be?

      - no advertisement
      - less spam
      - far less hate
      - real people
      - there's an "Edit" and even a very helpful "Delete and Regenerate" function for posts
      - Mastodon does have a very powerful Search function 🔍, just like Twitter back then
      - even if people often say it, it's neither "complicated", nor does it NOT have algorithms: it does, but they're not mandatory, but optional
      - supports CW (content Warnung) and ALT-texts for inclusion/accessibility

        @hpod16

        - you can FULLY (and fully means fully!) use even without an app, as opposed to e.g. Instagram
        - you can passively participate (read everything, not just a limited preview) even without an account!
        - for quotes, you have far more options than on other platforms and you decide, who can quote you (even afterwards)
        - you choose your "home", but are still connected with the whole fediverse

And give imperialists a kick in the ass! 🙏😉

@hpod16 @Ciarancuffe what has been your experience of “onboarding” onto #mastodon and how could we create a critical mass of politicians of all shades?

@iBallesty @hpod16 Good question. Very difficult to build followers, but I like the space and 'vibe'. I find Bluesky best for feedback, and I also post on Truth Social, just to watch the madness in real time.

"social" is less obviously something for a government to Do, but I bet a government could help translate popular client software into all the national languages, or sponsor "how to host a small instance" the same way there are community classes in gardening or any adult pursuit.

One of my hobbyhorses is that "hosting" is TWO important jobs, the computer side and the human side -- in English it's the same kind of "host" that might run a regular salon, or a friendly bar, etc.

@hpod16 Well, everything I did over at Twitter: sharing news, writing about my day, my thoughts, my hobbies, posting photos, linking blog articles from my blog and maintaining loose contact to other friendly people here. So nothing special 😊

it's usually called "moderation" online, but IMO it's like parties!

You welcome new people, you have a sense of both the agreed beliefs and the issues that are going to be touchy for your group, you do ongoing organization so people can find the good stuff...

and sometimes you have to throw somebody out though in a good system that's RARE and it always involves some people feeling it was too early and some people feeling it wasn't early enough.

                    Familiar???

@Bastianoso gosh, Twitter back in the day was such a cool place to be! I joined in 2011 and fell in love. (enough so that I made social media my career for the past 10 years)

Wholeheartedly seconding the recommendation of FediTips, i..e bullets 3-6 of the QUICK START on the landing page!

It's a guide for "how to ...", "what is ...", "where do I find ..." questions, but if you're looking for content recommendations, you need to be your own algorithm. 🌞

If you're into things like hashtag games, musical hashtag games, motto photography and similar, it's here too, but not "on the nose" to find, so just ask.

                        Enjoy!

@Bastianoso I'm still pretty salty about what happened to it.
                          It's an awful place now.

@hpod16 (that's the human side. There's a whole computer side that's technical, and then complicated stuff when human and technical decisions affect each other. But these don't have to be done by the same people, though they have to be able to talk to each other)

My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?

Imagine I'm preparing a workshop for people who want to understand and join Mastodon.
What could you tell people to make Mastodon look like a fun place to be?

Wide: Goofy hashtags! I'm personally fond of LichenSubscribe and Defaidodon , but there are people here doing ... anything.

Narrow: it's nice being on a server with an interest and seeing what fellow interests come up with. I'm on an intellectual-interest server, but considering getting a second account on a geographic-place server for my home city, just to separate work and home a bit.
