The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.
@brettcodes This is a nice change of pace from all the people saying they "can't deny the utility of AI" while also saying "they are uncomfortable with the harms". Hopefully you can keep your job (and maybe find others to join your side of things).
My non-tech job has a very easy contradiction w/r/t AI systems so I have been providing that explination to all my coworkers whenever I hear them express confusion as to why the system wasn't usedful.

@brettcodes (granted AI systems are nothing but contradiction. It's just in this case I can more or less prove it doubles our work load by being the exact same shape of the job we already do)

@brettcodes Very inspiring read, and what a great approach to go back to where the fun is in creating software, and in the end also invest into the relationship between you and your team.

@brettcodes It's very conforming to read someone thinking similar, having the same feelings around AI-transformed work (and life) - and even more, to see such a positive reaction around the YT and Fedi! Wishing you, myself, and other devs around the globe the very best!

@brettcodes Thank you so much for sharing details of this whole journey. I agreed with your observations, and have seen others go through this process in their own ways. I’m really glad you could recognize the effects on so many aspects of your wellbeing, and decide to stop!

@brettcodes This morning, I was thinking if this happens in research as well. It makes me arguably faster. But does it make me worse?
With suitable MCP servers, it helps me proof read manuscripts, cross ref vs my lab diary, inspect my citation management software etc.
But do I deskill myself like this?
@elhult @brettcodes Short answer is: yes! You’re absolutely diminishing your own understanding, and undermining the validity of your research.
Making real knowledge takes time. It just does! It’s a feature of the process, and the discoveries and connections you might make along the way can only happen in that time-based process.
Good luck!

@brettcodes observing my coding colleagues from next door, I see how they slowly lose their spark, their eye for detail, and their will to discuss or refine requirements.
"Why do it right if you can do it fast and adapt?"
this "move fast and break things" killed everything

there's a really strong ai sentiment here, sometimes to a fault, but you can also find some pro ai ppl. -

@brettcodes
the article is also really good! sadly companies want to push AI for coding to the point people feel obligated to use them, i hope you wont lose your job because of this decision -

@brettcodes As someone in the same boat, feeling this industry has left me behind because I have no interest in being a 'prompt engineer', a huge kudos to you for this. I could not click the Follow button fast enough. Welcome to the Fediverse.

@brettcodes seems I’m very fortunate that LLMs are available for me, but nobody forces me to use them. And so I don’t. I mean - by definition LLMs will spit out average code. And average code is
I’m perfectly capable of writing

@brettcodes I love this article because you explain the minimal (in my opinion) benefits and the pitfalls so accurately. I have never used AI and will never use AI including when I make calls to service providers. It gave me a sense of dread and doom as soon as it came out. I have a degree in IT. I only used it for a short time before I was forced into retirement.
On a separate subject, we also talked about the antisocial implications of social media, My Space was already out. -

@brettcodes that was a great read, man. I've seen similar sentiments but this was eloquent as hell, and you definitely put in the work trying it out. I don't use any of it either and luckily haven't been forced to yet (luckily unlikely, where I work now). But in March I lost my job of 14 years to some kind of 'AI' solution that had its own team. So am I bitter and weirded out? A little. Anyway. Thanks for writing all this up.
