@DonChacale My experience is that most often people only wake up when they are directly affected. My comment is in reference to what’s in store for midterms and Jan 3. There are going to be “MAGA Observers” at every precinct in the US according to the regime. I just don’t think we will be prepared to respond to that, especially if the Regime backs that escalation up with armed paramilitary. @Remittancegirl

IMO, movements like #nokings should have been dropping hints to their supporters that they need to focus their attention on better platforms.

If one is technically inclined, then clicking on a fedi link and landing on a foreign instance website doesn't seem too bad... we hopscotch right over that inconvenience. But most other people won't realize what happened and they will be confused/angry that Mastodon has "forgot" their login & won't let them access functions etc. This happens because the ActivityPub spec is incomplete; it should have defined a protocol handler.

@Remittancegirl What is the point of offering people a tech adventure (chaos)? If something presents itself as broken, then in the users' minds its broken; they'll move on.
Fedi culture is broken, too. The same people telling me the above is OK UX are also saying that teaching users to be aware of domain name spelling (with https) is a big infosec No-no. A tech culture that bases itself on disparate domains but doesn't think users should have literacy about domain names probably deserves to die out. (Keeping in mind that fedi is like 85% tech pros & enthusiasts.)
Bluesky "solved" this problem by making all links point to bsky.app. This makes it centralized, but bsky's backers don't really want decen.
