      I supposed that after a bit of media attention, this problem would be resolved pretty quickly, but because it involved problems in software, researcher training, peer review quality and publisher QC, progress on eliminating this problem has been very slow

        One measure that has worked and which I didn't predict at the time was the changing of human gene symbols to prevent autocorrect. Eg: SEPT9 was changed to SEPTIN9 and MARCH1 changes to MARCHF1.

          I still monitor these spreadsheet errors and publish monthly reports on my group's webpage. You can see that rates of affected articles are still 15-25%.

This is why we started the reproducibility network for computational biology. It is meant to be a society for data scientists in the life sciences that advocates and educates to raise research quality
