    @blogdiva How about buying an rj45 splitter so you can have your phone and your supra fax modem plugged in at the same time?

      @blogdiva @Shards

      20/20 without a sweat; this is mere Gen X stuff. Make the one that has “placed a call by talking to a human operator” and “listened to serials on a pre-transistor radio” and •then• I’ll have to call my parents.

        @blogdiva To be fair, only some Gen Xers have been inside a Blockbuster. Gen X was the generation when Blockbuster went bust.

            @blogdiva 18 or 19, depending on the parameters of encyclopedia. Millennial.

            Admittedly most of my fax usage was in a tech support job in an industry that is probably still using faxes in some places even today, for very irritating reasons. (Not healthcare but I know for certain healthcare is still using faxes in a lot of places. Not even just soft faxes but actual fax rooms and piles of paper. I had a surgery delayed due to that a couple of years ago even.)

              @claralistensprechen3rd nope. all Gen X were already adults or teenagers when that happened. i had my kids and my baby sister was in her early 20s when that happened. am 1966 and she’s 1979, so we’re both GenX. our brother (my puerto rican twin) was too (1967).

                    @bryanredeagle @blogdiva people always seem to forget that children have adults around them that have old stuff.

                    And children were taught to use computers and stuff in the 90s, the rest kind of follows no?

                    It's not like you had to be 30 to use the internet back then, it was on the middle school computers too.

                          @blogdiva 17/20 (millenial); we didn't have the money for an encyclopedia set, but used them at the library, I used casettes but didn't have anything to *record* from radio to one with, and we didn't rent movies because my mom worked with a guy who would sell us the 'snuck a camera into the cinema' versions, usually for cheaper than the rental price...

                              I do currently own a 2023 Grand Larousse Illustré, which has a whole second half for proper nouns that's surprisingly encyclopedic, so maybe that counts.

                              And yes, my friends make fun of me for still having dead-tree reference books. Funny that they always do this when I find an answer faster than they can on their "Internet".

                                  @bipolaron @bryanredeagle your privilege is showing. i taught high school in the 1990s here in nyc and not all our schools had internet access. certainly not in Puerto Rico. and yes, we were most likely in college or a job in legal or finance if we were using the internet BEFORE the web. the www isn't the internet. i had to telnet and gopher to do searches for my academic research.

                                  when it comes to gadgets, old and new obviously coexist. when it comes to the internet? that’s the divide.
