Just now, I almost got hit by not one, but TWO drivers at the same time!
Tried to make a drawing to make it more clear.
The van driver, which had to yield to me, didn't see me (I thought he had), so I was already cycling in front of him when I had to suddenly brake and swerve out of his way.
Then, the freaking BUS DRIVER didn't see me either!! So I almost got hit by the front of the bus as well.
Super high adrenaline now and SO ANGRY. This spot is SO incredibly dangerous, this whole area in Utrecht I live in (Zuilen) is freaking ATROCIOUS for cycling.
Also: too many drivers SUCK. I didn't do anything wrong here, yet that could almost have been put as a quote on my tombstone.

@gdinwiddie I know you mean well, but this is like...the worst reaction.
In the Netherlands EVERY car driver knows that there are a ton of cyclists around. It's normal. It's not on us, the cyclists, to be even more careful and to put ridiculous looking flags on our bicycles to accommodate drivers.
Feels a bit like victim blaming, to me, sorry.
@maaikees @gdinwiddie You would think that in a city in which there are thousands of bicycles, the car drivers would make sure to pay attention to bikes.
Yet, while at work, I had people from behind almost drive into my ambulance with its blue flashing lights on and the back being covered in neon-yellow, neon-red, and silver fucking reflective tape!
Cars are a problem in the sense that people grow dull to the dangers of traffic and become selfish in their steel boxes.
A bike lane is a street!

@maaikees can you report the bus driver? (you can 'round here, but we're small; if you knew time and intersection they'd get the cameras from the bus and see what happened; that time a driver passed me on my folder and just whipped in front of me to the stop.... I got a note of apology ;))

NL traffic enforcement seems no worse than that of SE or UK (in fact all 3 of our countries have relatively safe roads by both European and global standards) *but* I read about too many crashes against cyclists on 112nederland - and road traffic collisions in general, at least same level as here in UK, and it seems to be same bad driving that causes them (I also read the rijkswaterstaat traffic info)
Even if authorities take away someones driving licence that has to be enforced, which isn't so easy to do without ANPR everywhere (and even with that folk still flout the laws)

@maaikees pfff! Snap goed dat je er kwaad van bent. Als het weer een beetje gezakt is ook maar weer relativeren en bedenken dat het zo te lezen niet met opzet was en iedereen fouten maakt. Klinkt alsof vooral de wegindeling erg knudde is daar. Bij de gemeente klagen, Fietsersbond inschakelen, gemeentelijke politieke partijen aanschrijven. Is ook allemaal gezeik waar je misschien geen zin in hebt, maar heeft misschien wel effect. Sterkte!

@maaikees Al te herkenbaar. Staat inderdaad leuk op je grafsteen. Het helpt niet dat veel fietspaden links liggen. Effectief spookrijden maakt volgens mij dat je nog net wat slechter wordt gezien. Je moet wel!

@jonathanavt het zure is. Normaal rij ik wel aan de rechterkant op die weg met die steentjes (rechts van het tank station) maar net vandaag dacht ik “ik neem ff een andere route” 🫠🫠🫠

@maaikees Ik ben daar niet heel bekend. Ken vooral de Amsterdamsestraatweg. Als ik zo rondkijk denk ik dat je bij de brandweer bedoelt. Die klinkerstraat is ook niet je van het, zeg.

In the USA, when I rode a bicycle I had to assume that all the automotive drivers were blind idiots. Being right, but dead, wasn't a good alternative.

we need to fight back and inconvenience aggressors, like #CyclingMikey.not just »did you wear a bulletproof vest?« when our friend has been shot at; or »did you remember to put a lid on your drink?« if they've been drugged.
on an episode of #TheWarOnCars they suggested having a bottle with red paint to splash at aggressive drivers, marking them for others to see.

I didn't reach this age by being aggressive toward those much bigger than me.I once had a pickup truck pass me so close that his radio antenna hit my shoulder. Scared the shit out of me, and I ended up on the shoulder of the road. (It was a rural road.) That was over 50 years ago, and while I can't cycle anymore, I'm still stumbling along.

Wijlen mijn schoenmoeder zei altijd "je moet ervan uitgaan dat er allemaal idioten op de weg zitten". Ik probeer oogcontact met bestuurders te maken. Lukt vaak niet. Ze kijken weg.
