@FlockOfCats I still remember when I bought my first optical mouse, I was like "Woah, this new technology, how good can it be anyway"

@FlockOfCats Funny enough, I'm slightly too young to have had to clean them, but I did use them and opened one up once as a young child (as opposed to when I was older but still a child, as I used optical mice by then).

@mekki @zillion @FlockOfCats also if you remember when optical mice were called "laser mouse" to differentiate them from mechanical mice (even though they never really had lasers, just a red LED); works just as well.

You can't doomscroll if your mouse doesn't have a scroll wheel.

@FlockOfCats This is obviously a joke - mice are flexible enough to clean their own balls.

@FlockOfCats Ugh, and that stupid fiber-like formation of hairs and gunk that would form on the rollers was so hard to get off even with a q-tip... Actually, it was, more than anything else, the biggest culprit in reducing mouse accuracy. I never actually had to do any of the rest there, just get that off the rollers.

I have a whole bag full of old mouse balls. A place I used to work threw out a lot of old mice and I collected the balls, thinking they could be useful for something in the future.

Heavy, smooth, rubber coated, with a uniform size. Some day I will figure out what to do 😁

@mekki @zillion @FlockOfCats I started using a mouse a Xerox on a 6085 terminal, and it was an Optical mouse. They "upgraded" me to a Windows 95 PC with roller ball mouse. Then later all mice went Optical.

                                          Did you know?

In Australia to open the lid for ball holder you had to turn it clockwise, opposite as depicted.
