In all seriousness: I absolutely hate product and label designers... The amount of times I got service emails because one of our QA products "broke" just to realize some idiot designer removed the quiet-zone of a bar code, put a pattern in the bars, made the bars reflecting (as in bare aluminium) or other abominations again... No, our product is not broken, your god-damn label is out of the specs for our QA-product AND the standards for that barcode/QR-code... Our QA product rejecting 100% of your fucking production is actually doing its job and by disabling it you'll just move the point of failed reads down to the checkout/customers...

@rebane2001 i made a multi-user QR code generator (using ZXing and Spring Boot) which embedded the corpo logo as a water mark behind the code.
It never really took off in corpoland and it's abandoned now, but you could scan the codes it generated from the back of a lecture hall.
I also had it encoding fun things like vCards so you could pop your personal vCard at the end of a presentation to be captured.
kinda miffed it didn't take off tbh...

@rebane2001 what does "ec" mean, as in slide 2 "this only applies to the data and ec (green)"?

@rebane2001 I organize dance events in the street and I want people to be able to scan even from a long distance while walking, so I need the lowest density QRCode as possible.
If the qrcode contains 4k of data, the phone takes too long to scan, you need to really stay still, etc. But if your reduce to the bare minimum, then, you can have a very low density qrcode.And the latest trick I've learned is that if you use capital letters only (and some special characters ) in a URL, the qrcode gets less dense as well.
So, HTTP://MY.LINK/1234 is more scannable than http://my.link/1234

@rebane2001 I made a URL shortener + QRCode generator to get the most scannable QRCode, and most of it, it's open source because MY GOD IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A PROVIDER THAT IS NOT ENSHITTIFIED TO THE BRIM.

@rebane2001 What I keep wondering is if there isn't some way to render the QR code such that the reader does not expect there to be bits in the middle, i.e. you're not losing any data by covering them up.
...which would mean that you could make the center image an arbitrarily large percentage of the total image size (i.e. the actual QR code bits would be in an arbitrarily thin layer wrapped around that center image).
The answer is probably "no, because format design", but I still wonder.

@rebane2001 Thanks for the nice write-up! QR code tomfoolery arguably deserves way more attention than it gets today.
In my personal testing, I've found that fully preserved timing strips are not that important if the rectangle distortion is small. By shrinking the dots and filling the resulting gaps with a picture, you can get *very* clean looking results.

@rebane2001 One important thing: People need to be able to recognize the code as QR code. I'm really sure that codes like these will reduce the amount of scans

@rebane2001 @cR0w Slide #3 made me think: if you know the radius of the curved object you should be able to print a QR code that still reads? At least from a specific angle if, for instance, pixel aren’t drawn linearly any longer

@rebane2001 here I was thinking I understood qr codes, what do mean you only need 30%?? But- I- I thought it’s like a deck of cards with like too many possiblties to be realistically found in a lifetime… so wouldn’t that mean that if we only look at 30% of it, it could happen that it has the same 30% as another code? Like if I only look at the top two cards it’s totally possible to get ace heart and ace spade again with the rest still totally jumbled..
