@fj why not let people decide if they want such a large vehicle or not?
@reloadedhead @fj because they exist in a shared space.

@fj We had an F150 beside us on a Dual Carriageway, somehow in the Blindspot but that was an F150 and I've no idea why anyone needs a vehicle that big
The bed capacity was lower than the Mercedes Sprinter my dad used to own and that thing was basically the same size as one of these, but that's a commercial vehicle.

@fj
Well done Brussels!
Keep it up! -
@reloadedhead @fj Because they endanger others, use way more space and it also encourages driving like pricks.
Or is it just making pricks more visible?@richlv @fj do you mean they are more dangerous due to the size and potential damage in an accident?
I am genuinely asking, because I come from a land in which having pick-ups is very common in rural areas for work and stuff, but not that common in urban environments, because surely nobody wants to drive that in narrow streets!

@fj Rightly so...

@fj Ok ik American trucks are massive, but could you atleast have used a graphic that actually compares trucks and not the smallest form factor style car against a vehicle that *has* to be large enough to haul stuff.
@Rin3d @fj
That's not a vehicle for hauling stuff. It's a soccer-mom truck for running over the other kids.If it was for hauling stuff, all that space would be used for the truck bed, instead of wasting it up front where its only function is to prevent seeing the terror on the face of the kids as you run them over.
This is what a truck for hauling stuff looks like. Note where all the space goes:

@fj We have big problems with these large vehicles, and the super-sizing of pickups and SUVs in the narrow and winding roads that are village neighborhood streets in urban and suburban Thailand.

@fj we have enough trouble around here with enormous tractors and what they are towing.
-
@sanzky @fj That Peugeot is not an overly large car, it's about the length of a full size european station wagon like the classic Volvo 745 or Mercedes W123/W124T. I'd select the Mercedes GLS as a comparison for the Escalade, and then we're in the same ballpark of oversized ugly abominations. What's the more interesting question then: how many of each are sold in EU/US?

@reloadedhead @richlv @fj They absolutely are far more deadly in accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists (of which we have so many more in the EU than in the US).

@fj I strongly feel that vehicles should be taxed by unladen weight. The damage to roads -- which has to be met out of the public purse -- scales with the fourth power of the axle loading, and the tax should scale similarly.
It would be tricky to frame legislation which outlawed very large and heavy private vehicles which would not also outlaw fire engines, for example; but it wouldn't hurt to tax them into oblivion.
-
@fj why not let people decide if they want such a large vehicle or not?
@reloadedhead @fj Because letting random people slice the tires of such vehicles is not the way a civilized society should handle things.

@reloadedhead @richlv @fj I see aso’s driving these wank panzers around narrow streets in Amsterdam.

@reloadedhead @richlv @fj From what I can tell, they're not even that good as duty vehicles and most never get used in that way.
