hi! recently deleting instagram has super charged my desire to invest in alternative online social spaces!
I’m an incoming assistant professor in computer science at Loyola University Chicago. I study electronic waste and how to build computing tools to improve processes of reducing reusing and recycling computing material

@xjasminelu Love it! Welcome!!

@xjasminelu Hi welcome! I would like you to know one of our fellow fedizens: @wim_v12e
He reads compsci at Glasgow University
https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/staff/wimvanderbauwhede :
Low carbon and sustainable computing
https://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~wim/low-carbon-computing/
Compilers and runtimes for FPGAs, GPUs and manycore systems
Novel type systems for scientific computing, specifically for heterogeneous systems
Novel type systems for embedded systems design
Acceleration of simulation of quantum computing
Additionally, he's just and interesting person all around.
I know it can be hard to connect with 'your peeps' when first joining fedi; I hope this helps!
p.s. I am not in either of your leagues. Just providing an introduction. -

@nihilistic_capybara no worries

-
@xjasminelu hi, and welcome to Fedi! I wonder if you are aware of permacomputing projects and the communities around them, especially here?
@nina_kali_nina I’m on a permacomputing list serv but not on here! Would love to hear any recs

-
@xjasminelu what would one of those computing tools look like?
@felipe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVxmU2W1bI most recently using computer vision and some search strategies to find ways to reuse PCBs!
-
@xjasminelu
congratulations and welcome.
i was never on #instagram but deleted my #github account a few months ago.

@pelle thinking about that these days too
looking at codeberg but any alternatives you’d recommend? -
@MLE_online has some fascinating information about experimenting with copper glaze to solder wire onto pottery. They seem to have invented a very successful method, I think you will enjoy the read.
@CatDragon @MLE_online I’m already a fan
I interviewed Emily for one of my research papers a while back!!! -
sadly, bluesky is much more active, far as I can tell, then mastodon
@failedLyndonLaRouchite I’m there too!
-
Loyola is in a great part of the city! Congratulations on the professorship.
Check out the River & Roads coffee shop on Devon, just west of campus.
@SeanPLynch thank you! and thank you for the rec

Happy to boost - it's definitely an area worth studying.
Have you published anything (formal or not) about "Repair Cafes" and other popular movements to reduce e-waste / re-use "obsolete" electronics?

@xjasminelu Welcome! If you are looking for more alternative systems, me and a few others have been working on another project for a couple of years now: https://www.queer-spark.org/en/
Regardless, I hope the assistant professorship goes well! -

yes, that, or another forgejo server, or sourcehut.i'd just held on to my github account for reporting issues, but now i use email for that.
or mastodon, because some apps hosted on github have a mastodon account. (delta chat, organic maps, ...)
