    This fall, Apple will be cutting off millions of iPads from future OS updates. The solution seems obvious: Let us install a different operating system.

    This is already an option for Macs, but it's not for iPads. Couple this with how difficult these tablets are to repair and you've got a big problem for people who want to keep their iPads running past their expiration date. We think there's room for improvement. Read more at the link below.

      @iFixit re:

      On the iPhone and iPad, you can do no such thing.  This is in the name of security, but if unlocking the bootloader is so insecure, why is it allowed on the Mac? This should be a user choice, not a vendor choice. It’s your computer after all.

      Apple already responded to this one, and the answer is just..... something

      Multiple app stores are "regularly exploited on the Mac," Federighi said. He added that there's a "level of malware on the Mac that we don't find acceptable."

      https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/05/19/craig-federighi-blasts-mac-security-to-prop-up-ios-app-store

      so basically they keep selling something that they find unacceptable because... ????????????

        @iFixit Should it maybe be noted that at least some hardware can run for ages after updates run out? I mean, I have a 2012 Macbook Pro which Apple has obviously long since disowned but all the things I need to do on it work just fine. It's a bit different with iOS due to much tighter app compatibility, but still...?
