What's a good calendar application for Linux, with a good reminder/notification system, so ideally I can get notified multiple times before, and also afterwards if I missed it.
i was considering gnome-calendar but I'm not sure it supports non-gnome notifications, like with notify-send or something.
Currently my best solution is probably "remind", but getting an overview of events is maybe a little annoying, and I think I'd have to write a script for adding new events quickly. #linux #calendar

For most of my life I've never really used a calendar and I'm starting to think I might've missed quite a lot of cool things as a result, because it meant I generally didn't plan much, or I forgot them.
I guess I could use a printed calendar, but I kinda like the computer approach.
I don't like phone based solutions because I don't use that very much.I was also considered merkuro but I'd have to install 300 MiB of deps to get it. Maybe if there really is no other good option.

@marcusxms remind is great except it doesn't actually remind. i have to run "rem -c" every few days manually

@marcusxms evolution, you don't need to use the email parts. It has a very solid calendar implementation.

@muep Well I don't know, maybe it does send regular notifications, but it seemingly can't run in a daemon mode (at least I'm not seeing that option in --help), and so if I don't have it open it can't send a notification. But I don't want it open as a regular window constantly.
I'm not sure how GNOME handles that, because clearly it's not constantly visible there either, aside from perhaps displaying the date and time.
Maybe it's possible and I just haven't identified how yet.

re: overview of events it looks like `tkremind` might help? I'm only now watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SNgvsDvx7M to get a better concept of `remind`.
Aside from that, what would be the perfect notification system in your opinion? For example, how many notifications would you want? At what interval? etc. I'm mostly just curious, I probably don't have a solution.

@treeshateorcs What I've done so far with remind is to start it up in late boot in the background, and then the command it's executing is notify-send. So I get popups from notify-send.
So I do get reminders, but just browsing it as a calendar is not as easy as a GUI would be. But I've found that it can generate HTML, and so I'm considering making it create such HTML versions regularly, and then having a keybind to show them in a browser, or something.
Also "remint" can show them in a TUI. -

@LouisR85 It's quite cool! Haven''t tried tkremind but I've recently tried "remint" and that works alright. Also rem2html can generate HTML pages, so I've been considering doing something with that, like displaying it in a borderless browser window with a keybind, maybe.
Still, adding events is still a bit annoying. I guess one could make a widget for that in quickshell or something. Maybe there already is.

@LouisR85 Good question, I guess I would like a system where I can create N number of templates for events which includes a certain set of reminders I've specified once and then I can easily create events using one of those templates. During event creation or after it's possible to modify that event's reminders.
But even a system like "remind a week before + two days before + 1 day before + 6 hours before + after if fx. my computer wasn't on, when it was scheduled to remind me, would be good.
