@nepi I agree but as soon as I meet someone who is trying to make money, they disagree ...but yeah, maybe we should clearly draw the line between marketing and social media. People like to pretend they're just being ya everyday person socializing, sharing their art and then it becomes profitable but maybe that is gross? But I want artists to eat so they can keep making their art.

@nepi also, you reach is way better in that you either reach burnt out eepy ones that can really use some community or people with the most impressive CVs and only on fedi are u getting to know their furry catgirl side.

There's also a shortsightedness here, like they're so used to not having choices to make they imagine themselves to be passive observers. "Not enough people have joined Fediverse, therefore I will not join Fediverse."If just a fraction of those people would make accounts to cross-post, we might have the volume to get the kind of engagement they're asking for.
But also a chunk of the claim that there aren't many people here is patently not true. We have a fraction of what proprietary hellholes like Twitter and Bluesky have, but we do have a very large number (millions) of people, to the point my timeline is always full of art and it's easy to wander around and just find new people, and they are real people, because we have no incentive to let our numbers be inflated by bots.

@nepi Twitter had more people but didnt have more reach. It even feels lonelier knowing that you post something when the traffic is higher and still noone interacts with your posts. At least here i dont have that kind of feeling.

Very true. Mastodon and other fediverse platforms have great communities. As an experience, it's the diametrical opposite of enshittification.
