Can you somehow subscribe to other users' threads?
I find myself regularly bookmarking other users' posts for the sole purpose of later checking manually if more replies appeared. I see two issues with this:
1. It feels wrong to do manually what the network and app should do for me.
2. I probably don't see all replies from other instances. I'd hope that with subscribing I could increase their visibility to me.
I use the @Tusky app.

There's no way of subscribing to threads automatically, bookmarking and checking later is one workaround.
Don't worry about missing replies from other instances, the upcoming update of Mastodon (v4.5.0) will automatically fetch all replies from all instances no matter what instance you are on. It is already being tested on some instances and will probably be fully released within the next couple of weeks.
