    From Ulrich's book: Social  Democrat parliament member Kurt Schumacher, in 1932: "If we know anything about National Socialism, it's that for the first time in German politics human stupidity has been successfully and completely mobilized."
    Not surprisingly, in July 1933 Schumacher was arrested and sent to a concentration camp. He narrowly escaped execution and survived the illnesses and deprivations of the camp, to become a leading politician in postwar West Germany.
    That line about mobilizing human stupidity, though…

      @SteveBellovin I was *just* reading John Stuart Mill when I found this, "...I did not mean that Conservatives are generally stupid; I meant, that stupid persons are generally Conservative. I believe that to be so obvious and undeniable a fact that I hardly think any hon. Gentleman will question it."

      And this, too, seems particularly apt for our current situation.
