Got another mastoscold yelling at me for "using the platform to promote" my photos.
For the record, I don't generally sell my photos, here or anywhere else. But even if I did, I fail to see why that would be a problem.
Preventing artists from making a living is a strange hill to want to die on.
@mattblaze Your photography is amazing. I always enjoy even if I don’t interact with the post. That person can suck it.

@stefan @c_dan4th yep. I personally know several prominent artists, authors, and entertainers who were driven away from here by people enforcing these made up rules. The thinking (to the extent there’s actual thinking happening here) is that anyone who had a large following on twitter was - by definition - part of the problem with twitter.
@mattblaze @stefan @c_dan4th these people need to be named so we can mute/block them.

@mattblaze @stefan @c_dan4th SPAMming relentlessly is toxic: gently telling people what you are up to (even involving money) is generally not, IMHO. But distinguishing the two is nuanced and subjective, and to some extent in the eye of each beholder.
@DamonHD @mattblaze @stefan @c_dan4th I agree. Some people are here solely to sell things. That's fine for them to do, but I'm probably muting them if they're annoying about it.

Isn’t that why there’s that neat little “upload picture” icon? Whose picture would they prefer you promote? Someone else?

@stinerman This is a pretty reasonable response. You see something you don't like? If it breaks your server's rules, report it, otherwise mute/block the person, and any unique hashtags they might be using, and move on.
We need to normalize not sharing one's opinion on everything.
And I wonder how do people even come across some of this stuff. Maybe they need to better curate who they follow.
Or do some people just search keywords/hashtags in order to pick a fight?

@mattblaze I would expect at least the knowledgeable people in FediVerse to act more supportive towards artists after Gen Ai Slop -- which literally built to destroy creative people's lives. But of course humans too never cease to amaze me with their stupidity.

@mattblaze Love your photo posts! It might be funny to link them to election security, but you'd probably get grief for that too. Cuz, you know, "i dID mY OwN ReSEArCh"

Agreed. There is another fellow that promotes his photos for sale here. I really like them and I look forward to new posts. I am probably not inclined to buy them as I am in the unloading phase of my life (Winter), but I like seeing them.Anyone scolding you clearly didn't take a beat to see you are sharing. They must be a treat at HOA meetings.

Ignore them, there are some people on the Fediverse who don't understand that being able to make money on the internet isn't just something corporations do, a lot of artists, creatives, and crafts people are able to make a living doing something they love that they otherwise wouldn't.
And they don't understand that having a way for creators to make money on the Fediverse is good for its health and the variety of content. The bad monetization is the monetization of our personal data

@mattblaze what the hell? I love seeing photos and art here, and am in fact following several art related hashtags to see more! I have also bought stuff like t-shirts and bookmarks from independent artists posting here, and of course as an author I do promote my own books as well.
How on Earth these scolders think artists are able to keep making their art if they can't tell anyone about it?

Masto, from here, has a distinct 'artists: in theory, absolutely, yes - selling art: go back to Twitter, capitalist pig' vibe.
It's a spiteful anti-influencer undercurrent. No one wants to 'create' people on the fedi. Just cats and blooms. I get it. Fuck 'influencers' as a whole species.
But they ain't the same things. My mom was everyone's biggest booster. I get that enthusiasm from her. I want everyone trying to do well. Like I cheer for everyone on 'Price Is Right'.

@mattblaze Some of my favorite people on here are artists who post their work, whether it's for sale or not. And I've happily bought from people who are selling their art.

I make this and it’s an important part of who I am and I want to share that with people is like a central aspect of what social media is all about in my view.
If you happen to also sell them either to put groceries in your fridge or so that other people can enjoy them closer then I thinks that’s a bonus not a problem.

@mattblaze @wagenseil Would you be willing to sell them to me? I can pay in tea.
@ZDL @mattblaze @wagenseil Tea is the shit, Matt. You should go for it.
