@neil @GrapheneOS I wish I could say I'd had that experience. I had two Pixels, and with both the battery lasted a year. Both had Graphene which I enjoyed. The next phone, a Fairphone 5 with Murena was also excellent, except the only part that isn't user serviceable (the main board) developed a fault. I bought it to try to escape the problems with battery life. Now I am miserably using an iPhone and swearing at it every other day!

I have a Fairphone with Android. I want to switch to Murena (in fact, would have liked to buy with it from the start), but I can't afford to break my existing setup to try it out.

I also have apps that I've paid for through the Play store and don't really want to give up or find alternatives. It's a bit of a bind. At some point I'll hopefully be able to afford a second hand device to try it out.

@CharlesShould @avian @neil I chose Fairphone after my old phone decay mostly because of replaceable parts. I want to keep this phone as long as possible, only changing batteries when necessary.

@GerardThornley @neil @GrapheneOS I bought my Fairphone with Android on it and managed to get Murena on it fairly easily. I was surprised actually how straightforward it was. Having said that, I have technical experience. You can put play store apps on the Murena E/OS too.

          FWIW, I run @GrapheneOS on a Pixel.

This will be my third GrapheneOS device.

A genuinely excellent Android experience, with many years of support and security updates.

In 1998 I was on my third PalmOS device (Palm III), which had a 3rd-party serial cable to get online with a GSM handset. And IR HotSync with other Palm devices. But I mostly did serial HotSync with a desktop.

2002: Ooh! A new PalmOS device! Amazing! HotSync backup and off we go!

2004: Wow! This WindowsMobile device has a keyboard, as is basically a mini laptop. Cool!

This is, of course, a daft mentality.

The new black slab is an incredibly powerful computer, with an all-day battery life, a great camera, and functionality which connects me to a world of friends and knowledge, for less than £500.

It can also make and receive calls.

...aaand the extra compute is being used on surveillance, ads powered by said surveillance, unwanted LLMs, automatic corruption of the images captured by that great camera (see images of wildfire-choked skies being "corrected" from yellow to grey, for example)...

Even with the death of Moore's Law, the general population would probably be seeing more benefit to the advancement of hardware if we weren't in a cyberpunk dystopia.

Exactly. I carry a phone so that I can run apps and make the occasional call, not stare lovingly at the home screen and the notification bar. The only recent Android improvement that's genuinely been useful to me is the ability to run multiple apps in windows, and then only on tablet-sized devices. As long as a device gets security updates, I'll keep using it.

@david @neil Fairphone 5 is a highly insecure device without basic privacy and security updates. It has an end-of-life Linux kernel branch with no security support and doesn't receive other important privacy and security updates. It's increasingly easy to exploit to the point that there are many exploits being shared on GitHub which can be used against it. It's not a safe device and there's no safe operating system available for it. /e/ drastically reduces privacy and security compared to AOSP.

@GerardThornley @david @neil /e/ drastically reduces both privacy and security compared to the Android Open Source Project. If you care at all about those, stay far away from it. The standard Fairphone software doesn't receive good updates and everything older than the Fairphone 6 has an end-of-life kernel but it's still better than /e/. /e/ and Murena products are not what they're marketed as being.

So would I, which is one reason I carry a #Fairphone 4, whose battery I can change in five minutes using nothing but — bizarrely — a plectrum.

I also run #AccuBattery, which notifies me when the battery has charged up to 80% so that I can walk over and unplug it. Stopping at 80% seems to reduce battery wear: I'm still at over 70% health after almost five years.

@neil @GrapheneOS Is there anything you notice as missing? I only have a single functioning phone (pixel 9a) and I genuinely want to try it, but also don't want to hit a major block that I'm not anticipating.

A couple of banking apps refuse to work. One might be down to me using F-Droid to install Bitwarden, rather than GrapheneOS. The other is - AIUI - because of GrapheneOS.

That's good to know - it's mostly banking and 2FA stuff that concern me. A dead device last year (Pixel 6 just went blank while using it never to work again) caused me a lot of hassle with 2FA, some accounts I've never recovered.

2002: Ooh! A new PalmOS device! Amazing! HotSync backup and off we go!

2004: Wow! This WindowsMobile device has a keyboard, as is basically a mini laptop. Cool!

                                    ...

2026: I must get a new black slab because security updates have run out on my current black slab which, for all other intents and purposes, is absolutely fine. The new black slab does nothing new for me, and all I see is the chore of setting it up.

@neil Meh, expansions contract, then expand, until it all goes Big Crunch.

Could we do a LOT better in some areas, that are VITAL to our root infrastructure?

                                    You bet.

@neil The new black slab is also 5mm bigger than the old one which already barely fit in your pocket. The last black slab that was somewhat comfortable to hold and carry around was made six years ago by a single company that insists on shipping their own slabOS (at least that one still gets security updates). Everyone else stopped 10+ years ago.
