spanking is child abuse.
leave the spanking between consensual adults. or as they say, hit someone your same size, you fucking cowards.
don’t ever raise a hand to any kid, unless it’s for a hi-5.
found that expressing my feelings, especially my disappointment, was far more powerful. taught my sons boundaries and to think about how their choices affect the rest of us.
raising men with empathy and to have empathy isn't just good parenting. it’s real antifa work.
@blogdiva i express my continued disappointment with my children by refusing to ever procreate.

@blogdiva
I really wonder how many of the adults who believe that it is ok to beat their kids would be in favor of bringing back public lashings as a valid form of punishment that they might be subjected to themselves at some point (or maybe I don't actually want to know

@blogdiva 100% child abuse and should not be tolerated. I've heard folks defend this by saying they were beaten and turned out ok, but no you fucking did not, you turned out into someone who defends child abuse.

@blogdiva It has permanently damaged my relationship with my dad tbh, and nothing can change that

@blogdiva hey, i'm not gonna tell you how to raise your children.
i am going to tell you that my siblings and i were all spanked as children. i am going to tell you spanking did nothing to address the root of our "behavioral problems" (read: ADD and/or ADHD). i am going to tell you that my parents have no contact with their own three children, nor any contact with their grandchildren (my niece and nephews). i am going to tell you correlation != causation, but y'know draw your own conclusions

My mother's disappointment is a far more potent tool than any spanking ever could be, and continues to be to this day 30 years later. Wild that folks don't understand this.

@blogdiva I’m a little surprised at the numbers but maybe shouldn’t be. I remember how all of us feared “the strap” in elementary school, and a quick search shows that wasn’t fully prohibited in Canadian public schools until 2004. And still there are private evangelical schools out here that let teachers beat kids with paddles - the “spare the rod” people are still around.

Withering disappointment lasts forever
Physical violence has a shelf life and a correlation with posting "my kids won't talk to me" on Facebook

My parents never hit me, and we never hit our son.
My school didn't use corporal punishment, though many in England did. Our headmaster said he didn't think people should hit girls and he couldn't have one rule for them and another for the rest of us
Other people will have to judge how well we all turned out.

happy to report that, though not a grandma, i’ve mastered it. am infamous for my raised eyebrow. all credit goes to Leonard Nimoy’s Spock.

@KerryMitchell @blogdiva I had a friend who was strapoed by the principle in the early 80s. It was technically forbidden but this guy was an old timer. My friend's parents were pissed, and the principle retired shortly after. It was an open secret that he was using it, just took the right adults to end it.

The pithy quote that has really put it in perspective is:
"Is your child capable of listening to reason? If yes, then use reason, if no then why do you think they'll understand spanking?"
And now, in the throes of "terrible twos", I understand that. When she's in a tantrum, adding pain to it will not help and when she's not in a tantrum, we can generally talk through whatever it is.

Here in Aotearoa New Zealand spanking children is illegal. When the law passed people forecast the sky would fall. Interestingly it did not.
