The framing of this episode is extremely silly ("Is she a prophet... or is she just wrong?"): That is the oddest dichotomy I've encountered in a while.

The framing of this episode is extremely silly ("Is she a prophet... or is she just wrong?"): That is the oddest dichotomy I've encountered in a while. I'm a scholar, carefully observing what's going on now through the lens of my expertise, and sharing what I see.
I do my best to get things right, though no one can hope to be 100% correct and on top of that I'm working in a field where a lot of the claims I am debunking are based on non-disclosed datasets, etc.

To describe that as either being "a prophet" or being "just wrong" resonates maybe with the very religious overtones of some of the "AI" discourse --- and points up how much of it is simply untethered from reality.

@emilymbender
I wonder if they think the weather person on the news is a prophet lol. -

@emilymbender It doesn't give you credit for analysis or expertise either way.

@emilymbender An academic working for a non-prophet organisation, then.

@emilymbender It reminds me of how certain self-consciously confrontational interviews shows pitch for an oh-so-serious demographic desperate to consider themselves informed. Hard Talk on BBC used to do this, as did Newsnight before certain big name head-to-heads. They pair it with a Devil's advocate style of questioning. Still, if they let you speak, they let you speak...

@emilymbender While I'm here in fact, is there one particular interview or written piece you would suggest to show university students who rely on "AI" on a daily basis? I have one of your videos in mind where you discuss summaries (how LLM's output is based on training corpus, not just an inputted text) but it may not be the best.

@emilymbender I think you did great. You managed to show the difference between us (reseachers) and them (people with huge conflicts of interest making PR statements).
