    When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

    @jascha Which was always why I found the fake Moon landing claims so hilarious. The number of nerdy talkative scientists and engineers they'd have had to keep silent was in the thousands and yet not one came forward with evidence of the fake. Hmmmm.

      @azphilosopher @jascha Most of these people believe the government is both too incompetent to be trusted with any power and also so incredibly competent at keeping an explosive and important secret. Sounds plausible!

        @jascha

        This is how the supps cartels operate.

        There's a reason the last place I worked started every meeting by warning us no information must leave the room or we'd be fired, but that it was vital for us to know, in-order to be able to squeeze the phrase 'may/can support' before every promising empty broad statement to get people to buy a $60 bottle of root dust.

          @jascha At most, I've seen instances of their bosses not wanting you to know things, but those tend to also be the same people bankrolling the people saying "scientists don't want you to know"

            @jascha often true, but I studied astronomy and have had professors hesitant to talk about the protests against telescopes on Hawaii and why they were actually protesting against them

            (astronomers took the space using force, it was sacred to the locals, and are filling it with trash and shit)

              @GutterPoetry @jascha That is a valid issue.

              That is a science issue but it is a blind spot that is being addressed.

              I'll give you an example.

              My father was in a diabetic coma, but he had no ketones in his urine. Why? He was East Indian. The medicine around that has changed.

              Not misogyny. Misogyny requires intent. Medicine has been biased toward white males. No question. But I won't say every doctor who built it hated women. That seems extreme.

              Some did. Maybe many. But not all.

              @knowprose @jascha

              Science is only as unbiased as the researcher, and given that most people (even women) carry unconscious bias against women, there is little chance that this issue will be addressed so easily. The same goes for racial bias. Knowing about the problem doesn't alleviate it, huge changes must be made, studies replicated, new investigations carried out.

              Misogyny can be overt or not & through direct and indirect means. Neglect of female health is misogyny & wasn't accidental.

The kinds of scientists that maybe should NOT be heard are #Christian Scientists, #Creation Scientists, Industry-funded scientists, Astrologers, #Numerologists, Homeopathy researchers, #Conversiontherapy advocates, #FlatEarth researchers, #Antivax scientists, #Phrenologists, #Eugenicists, #SovereignCitizen legal scientists, #Cryptozoologists

                      @dougiec3 @jascha Might be related to how there are a lot of “cures” for cancer that never became a product.

                      Because killing cancer is pretty easy. The problem is not killing the patient. What’s impossible is for the media to not wildly incorrectly report on things:/

                              @jascha Also, "they paid off the scientists to say [something untrue]" (or to hide the truth) is another sign that the speaker doesn't know a damn thing about scientists (and probably has an axe to grind and/or some snake oil to sell you).

                              If they were that motivated by money, they wouldn't have gone into science in the first place. They'd have gotten an MBA or something.

                              @kagan @jascha As a historian of science I can state that this claim hasn’t stood up since at least the 1950s and that the introduction of NDAs into the grant process about 20 years ago has made hiding the results more common than we might expect.
                              The most glaring recent example being the climate scientists at Shell who never disclosed their research but most commonly it happens in medical research.

                                    @GutterPoetry @jascha I have no question that there is bias. That's part of being human.

                                    Which is where peer reviews, etc, come in.

                                    As to specific biases that you are pointing to... I don't have specific data so I cannot comment on it.

                                    The whole point of science, imho, it to fill in holes in our knowledge and to ask better questions.

                                    Do you have any ideas on how to improve on the issues you perceive?

                                        When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

                                        @jascha yaasss!

                                        Exceptions:

                                        - it's not actually a scientist but someone trying to claim the mantle of science to legitimize something that isn't science

                                        - it's a scientist talking about something other than science (ex, I don't particularly want you to know the pin number for my bank card)
