A most succinct summary of the Meta settlement. -

JUSTICE: HOW TO KILL META!
========================The legal math on media is broken. The punitive measures are not effective deterrents.
If you look at the numbers, Meta does harmful things, apologizes, pays a pittance, and still comes out ahead financially.
Zuckerberg sold out his users data to Cambridge Analytica, influencing the US election. Then he appeared before Congress like a contrite little schoolboy - "Oops! I didn't mean to accidentally cut multibillion dollar deals and sell out Facebook users. Honest mistake. I promise not to do it again ( unless the price is right! )"
Because of the math, he still came out ahead.I left Meta's platforms a long time ago.
People who are not savvy, are locked into the Facebook walled garden, because of the Network Effect. ( "I can't leave Facebook. All my friends are on Facebook!" )
Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.
Here's a plan of action:
1) Place ads on Facebook, explaining the benefits of #Mastodon
( https://joinmastodon.org/ )1.1) Freedom from Meta's censorship and algorithms.
1.2) A community owned, open social media platform.
2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook, and deleting their Facebook account.
3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right Mastodon instance.
4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.
5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook migration registry.
6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.
7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones.

While I indeed do appreciate the effort and agree with your suggestions, I feel like mentioning the #Fediverse as a whole instead of merely #Mastodon's implementation would be more true to the mission of our project.
Additionally, the proposition of a “random server” may not be as simple as you may initially assume. I feel like if they somehow end up in a server with policies they dislike, this may risk the possible inverse effect of people being even more put-off by the Fediverse due to a bad first impression.
Finally, due to the demographics of Facebook users being on the more older side, I'd like to posit that perhaps a comparison to the #Usenet #newsgroups of old would help make the explanation more pedagogically accessible. Cheers!

This is a good start of an idea, because only collective action is going to lead to any good outcomes. However I think that this needs some more development. For instance, who's going to pay for the ads? And secondly, wouldn't Facebook either bury the ads so they get little to no exposure, or even just outright refuse the ads?
When/if we can solve those problems, we can get to work on assembling volunteers to start building the infrastructure for the rest of it. If those problems can't be solved, then we can brainstorm an alternative approach and see how much of the rest of the plan we can salvage, unless any better ideas come up.

Thanks. It was indeed, meant to be a start, subject to community input, rather than a complete solution.
1. We could set up a website to facilitate the exodus out of Facebook/Twitter. Say: Facebook2Fedi.org and Twitter2Fedi.org
2. The websites can be publicized through word of mouth, or any number of other means, not just through ads on Facebook.
3. It's a week's worth of work for an experienced programmer. So the requirements break down as:
+ A programmer's pay for 1 week. ( or a volunteer programmer ).+ 2 internet domains.
+ managed web hosting costs for 1 year.
+ customer support hotline number.
A lot of these costs can probably be covered by existing Free Software projects, which may offer free hosting. We might find enough Fediverse volunteers to operate the hotlines.
Thoughts?

#SocialJustice #Activism #FreeSoftware #HumanEmancipationGood ideas there. Perhaps an introduction to the #fediverse at large is the better approach.
You are also right that a random instance might not be optimal. Perhaps a few handpicked, general instances would be a good default. eg: Mastodon.social
As for the rest, please see a more detailed implementation plan here:

Please keep the ideas coming. I very much appreciate it.

We're doomed and they'll make a profit from our doom. This is what capitalism looks when it is unchecked — even while losing they're still winning.

#Law #USA@ashwin @joyoftech what's Facebook migration registry?
-
@ashwin @joyoftech what's Facebook migration registry?
Every user leaving Facebook can opt into the Facebook migration registry.
Every user who joins Mastodon, will be automatically reconnected with their Facebook friends, who also opted into the registry.
Here in Japan, there are earthquakes and tsunamis. In any areas of catastrophic change, it is good to have a registry, so one can be reunited with one's family and friends, after a shake up.

@joyoftech I #shitcanned Facebook after ~20yr in the past week or so. I was hardly using it anyway, but I fear the damage is done, and their GDPR compliance may be performative only

@Epic_Null @MxAlba @joyoftech The stories in the Japanese press about a US examination into access by Accenture to private WhatsApp content have shall we say, gone dark?

I am sure they will gladly fuck over any of their former clients for the right amount of
money.Can we afford it?
