For the record, I don't generally sell my photos, here or anywhere else. But even if I did, I fail to see why that would be a problem.
Preventing artists from making a living is a strange hill to want to die on.

FWIW I throughly enjoy your photos in my feed. You have a great eye and compose beautiful photos. Keep doing what you’re doing.

@mattblaze My wife's grandmother would calmly advise with a polite smile, "Let them get glad in the pants they got mad in."
-
@CStamp I think social media has made it too easy for people to share their opinion, and some people don't stop to think if it's wanted.
I made this as a bit of a joke, but at the same time, maybe we do need more friction?
Funny!

@mattblaze my honest reaction to people like that
-
@stefan @c_dan4th yep. I personally know several prominent artists, authors, and entertainers who were driven away from here by people enforcing these made up rules. The thinking (to the extent there’s actual thinking happening here) is that anyone who had a large following on twitter was - by definition - part of the problem with twitter.
@mattblaze I know you know this better than me, but what a perfect example of "correlation does not imply causation." Xitter.
-
@stefan You're so real for making these things, the Fediverse is a better place thanks to your work.
@pengilly Ah, well, thank you! Doing what I can to contribute.
-
@mattblaze I hate the folks who think artists promoting their own work is "spam". Individuals making things is the point. Literally the reason I'm here rather than somewhere else. I specifically, explicitly, entirely, want to see what people are making.
Exactly.
And it’s not a new discussion, it pops up every now and then - and if anything, I feel over the years people have become even more understanding and welcoming if people show their art or craft and link to their shops.
We’ve got the portfolioDay hashtag for promoting artwork, I see people searching for artists for commissions…
Personally I get kind of bored if I follow an account and every single post just says “buy this work” and never anything personal but hey, if I’m not into it, I unfollow, what’s the big deal?
There’s definitely no rule that would prevent people from showing their products or art. It’s not kind to say so, it’s uncaring, and it’s not true.

@mattblaze I dont get how these clods dont see the difference between indies self promoting and giant corpos hocking their cheap shit.
Like when I say I hate advertising, it means I hate having some company force a post into my feed about whatever useless shit they happen to be peddling.
I WANT lovely people making games, and art, and hand made textile plushies on my feed that I could potentially buy one day as a gift for myself or a loved one

@mattblaze Nobody has yet made a compelling argument to me as to why Fediverse people should be attacking anyone for selling their own products directly. As long as everyone adheres to the rules of their own server, blocking and muting is perfectly adequate for avoiding unwanted promotion and advertisement.

@stefan @CStamp @mattblaze Yeah, it's good. Maybe it could be part of the client config, where one could edit the messaging and/or the heuristics for when it appears.
With a quick toggle, like a "cool down mode". Great work, again!

@mattblaze Purity tests and scolds (no matter what the alignment) are the death of all communities.
Smack 'em. Block 'em. Piss them off by living your life happily while they flap their arms ineffectually in outrage.

@mattblaze Agreed. I loved seeing hobies, even if they sell them, on social media. Of all the things to bitch at users for, them sharing who they are is what social media is. What I love about this space & Blue Sky is how full of artist they are & devoid of the psychotic hate of Meta & X. Hopefully they'll wake up & leave you the hell alone.
-
@wagenseil Good, because I don't plan to sell them to you!
@mattblaze @wagenseil Would you be willing to sell them to me? I can pay in tea.

I think #SelfPromotion is valid, but I guess the same despicable beings also report accounts for #begposting rather than just use the #mute button.- They propably also call the cops on homeless ppl IRL…

@mattblaze Never saw the other 999 times, but OK, then. I won't tell you anything the next times you complain about someone craving for attention that goes after you. It does happen a lot, I've noticed.
Pinky promise.
@mattblaze On quite another note, Matt, next time someone complains to you about promoting, you may point to the fact that the practice is so commonplace that there is even a set of commonly accepted hastags for it.
