    @afewbugs @mewsleah @therivercrow
    Also due to Charity shops putting up prices, it's cheaper to buy new from temu etc.

    Our shop has staged a mini rebellion and we now have a wired crate where all clothes are a £1 before we send them off for recycling if they don't sell.

    When I started volunteering Oxfam specified the shops were to support the local community as well as making money, their policy has changed for the worst.

    *Edited to remove the glaring typos

    @debbie @afewbugs @mewsleah @therivercrow the "personal responsibility" diversion has disempowered people and discouraged improvement campaigns for centuries and is still an effective tactic today

      @SquirrelwithaninvisibleW @afewbugs They have a grift of course! So not actually retired. None of it adds up though.

      @keefeglise @afewbugs and *this* is part of them promoting it? Marketing ain’t their strong point.

        I hate headlines like this. You read the article and discover she works in finance, he runs a life coaching business whatever that is, and they retired once their savings hit £1 million which didn't come from making their own sandwiches.

        Meanwhile out in the real world most of us have been bringing packed lunches to work since the 2010s at least and are still one unexpected vet bill away from a couple of months of home haircuts.

            @afewbugs 99% of the time the 'hard workers' from these bootstrap bullpoop articles are from a wealthy background too, so housing and student debt were never issues for them, and family connections opened doors.

                @afewbugs It's actually flat out impossible to make a million in an average lifetime at minimum wage even if you have zero expenses (free rent, free food). At minimum wage in the US it would take 66 years, pre-tax, putting you well above the life expectancy of 79 years to 84.

                  @afewbugs Ah yes… the bourgeoisie pretending their "money saving for only 10 years enabled them to retire early" (or any other variant of this bullshit like "bought a house at 35, we don't pay rents anymore") AKA 3people dying at work is lies, all you have to do is too take the good decisions to be able to retire young" and "Poor people deserve to be poor because they don't know how to spend their money"…

                  Fuck this bullshit and pack of lies…

                        @afewbugs Generally speaking the filter in British journalism is pretty poor.
                        You can see articles like these all the time. Basically a chain of click baits.

                          @afewbugs Also fun numbers, to make that much in savings from "making lunch" they would have had to be spending just under $200/day on lunch to save that much in that short amount of time.

                                    @nusher @afewbugs the article deliberately doesn’t mention the crucial detail of their income (just a vague ‘good’), whilst labouring on their novel money saving methods (assemble your own food! Jumpers!). We’ve been ragebaited.

                                    @SquirrelwithaninvisibleW @nusher @afewbugs This is a good point that's almost certainly being deliberately glossed over. I consider myself reasonably well paid, but I'd need over 30 years of saving my entire take-home pay before I'd have a million in savings. It sure ain't the packed lunches that made the difference!
