You know what causes really intensely powerful vibrations in the ground? Rocket launches. And do you know what really powerful vibrations in the ground cause in coastal wetlands? Liquifaction.
SpaceX has completely lost their grip on reality and all of us are going to pay the price in various ways as they try to build impossible dangerous things.
@sundogplanets
So the whole thing is just going tip ever so slightly off vertical? Absolutely no way that could stress the launch vehicle in unexpected ways... -

At the Mythic Level Elon thinks he’s a Hero in a Heinlein Novel@MedeaVanamonde @sundogplanets He thinks he's the hero of an Iain M. Banks novel, but if he'd ever actually read one he'd realize he's the villain (and also Banks would have hated him).

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a launch site on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them.
It sank into the swamp.
So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp.
So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.
But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, the strongest launch site in all of America.

Well, for the men for who the rules don’t apply, including physics, we’ll find out.
If the ground underneath their launchpads liquefies and renders them useless, at least in someway the damage will be limited though at great cost.
On the other hand, if Elon really intends to convert the rocket engine manufacturing facilities into gasturbine generator facilities, maybe we won’t worry so much about rocket launches

@sundogplanets I hope that the launch site sinks & that it's really really expensive for SpaceX.

@sundogplanets Has anyone thought about the Strategic Oil Reserves that are located in salt caverns in Louisiana near Texas?
The salt actually dissolves in the oil and leaves a sludge that cannot be refined.
It also thins the walls of the cavern as the salt dissolves.
Those vibrations may be more harmful than ever imagined!

@sundogplanets Actually, a question— does this actually differ from existing launch sites in, say, Florida? I have never been to cape Canaveral specifically but my understanding is that slice of Florida is Louisiana-like levels of wetlandiness.

@mcc @sundogplanets very different geologically. Both are wetlands, but Florida is a giant finger of limestone sticking into the ocean, whereas southern Louisiana is made of endless layers of mud that the Mississippi has been depositing for millions of years.

I have been wondering if any of the proposed launch pads will ever be completed; let alone used to launch anything.
Since pouring the concrete and vibrating it to get the bubbles out is already a big task if trying to build on sand.
There's a reason Canaveral was built on coquina and limestone.
@michael_w_busch @sundogplanets
South Louisiana is sediment loam all the way down.
At least Corpus/Brownsville has some bedrock under 100 feet of sand, and doesn't have saltwater running up the rebar five feet above sea-level.
That doesn't take king tides and post-ElNino surges into account...it'll get worse from there
