"Beginning next week, most Australians get free electricity for three hours every afternoon. That's what happens when you build out wind, sun, and batteries
As the cost of clean energy keeps plummeting, it gets more and more obvious how much money we waste, and how much financial risk we incur, by staying with fossil fuel."

@c_9 I agree. I think there is a reasonable balance to be had, where would could continue to produce oil for export so long as there is a market (recognizing that the market is going to die fairly quickly due to economics of renewables), while we proactively transition to wind/sun/batteries and find ways to enter the renewable hardware markets.
I’m more immediately concerned about our nuclear fixation.

In NZ we have a choice. Free power evening/nights during the week or free power in the weekend from 9-5. (We choose the weekend and it saves us between 10 - 20% on the power bill. -

@c_9 Free electricity would be great, but I’d even be happy with the elimination of TOU pricing. Imagine affordable electricity, when you’re awake, and actually need to use it. That’s where solar/wind power really looks appealing to me.

Came here to say this. Irish energy is the most expensive in Europe. It's eye watering.
Not connected*; 22% of our energy output goes to data centres.

@c_9 Well done, Australia! 3 hours a day is enough to keep most cars powered for daily trips. imagine the reduction in pollution!

The nice thing about alternative energies is if China stops exporting alternative energy generation or the copper wire or the aluminum or cement you can go for 10 or 15 years before you get desperate again. most geopolitical crisis are resolved before that.
Refining copper, aluminum, and plastic depend on oil based chemicals. Most basic inputs to industry use fossil resources. China is a single point of failure in the global economy.

@c_9 I love the line: “And when governments do their job well, the results can be amazing.”

@LovesTha I can’t deny that TOU pricing makes it possible to lower my energy bill, but when doing shift work, it can be a struggle to stay up late enough to have a shower or do the laundry/dishes. It’s seasonal too, so even though it’s been cool enough here not to even contemplate turning on the A/C, the model dictates that in another 20 minutes for me, it’ll be switching over to high pricing for the day. I do understand your point though.

Standing in the way of innovation in Solar cells and wind turbines to go back to the ancient and inefficient fossil fuels is ignorant.
While i'm generelly against the Chinese government. The fact that China invests tons into solar power, while the EU and US are wanting to go back to fossil fuels is laughable.

@c_9 Except in the uk where the insane system we have says renewables are sold at the price of gas generation. Because we are led by Donkeys... And that's being polite.
