    The AI Gigafactories call is now open.

    Today, we launched a call for tenders to establish up to 7 AI Gigafactories across Europe, boosting Europe’s computing capacity and unlocking more than €30 billion in investment.

    I am pleased to see Member States, industry, and the Commission coming together to build these facilities, which are key to strengthening our technological sovereignty.

    This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.

    @HennaVirkkunen

    Disgusting squandering of Earth's limited resources. The European Union should be ashamed of itself.

      @HennaVirkkunen "gigafactories" must be the marketing rebadge of "datacentres" because you know how unpopular they are.

        Whoever has a lack of drinking water. This politician is to blame.
        And when there is a scarcity - they have already used up their allocation several times over.

          @HennaVirkkunen I hope you will consider how strongly represented people in computing is here on Mastodon and how many negative reactions you're getting for this call. The two might be related.

          @malte @HennaVirkkunen Unfortunately, this account so far is for posting only (but good to have it nevertheless!).
          If you want to provide (polite) feedback, their office was responsive over email, probably would be similar with phonecalls.

              This is amazingly stupid. The bubble is showing signs of popping the hardest of any bubble ever, and the money is urgently needed for things that don't destroy the planet.

              Put that funding in solar, wind, grid batteries and new long distance power lines.

                  @HennaVirkkunen This absolutely the wrong thing to be doing, building centres for the thief of human intelligence, and human races critical resource - water... A.I is a grift, a nonsense engine, humanity is infinitely better in every conceivable way without it.

                  The fact the EU is celebrating this is an utterly psychotic move - may your path to realising these monstrosities be harder than the search for another habitable planet after we've destroyed the Earth through these follies!

                      - LLM is a technological deadend,
                      - LLMs are built in deeply immoral and largely illegal manner with stealing peoples work without their consent,
                      - It's elitist, closing that stolen knowledge behind subscription that poorer people won't be able to pay,
                      - Those gigafactories gussle up an ungodly amount of energy that should be used by the people, moving the goalpost of only ecological energy production further away,
                      - Calling them gigafactories is the biggest lie since they provide only a really small amount of work places for highly trained people.
                      - What are the chances that those gigafactories will be used in some degree by companies that use technology to support palestinian genocide? I guess high.

                            @HennaVirkkunen Europe is on fire and you’re spending money on data centres that drain water supplies and heat up their surroundings. The money they make will go into the pockets of the super rich, the jobs will be few. Sounds like a recipe for civil unrest to me?

                                @engineer @danielquinn @HennaVirkkunen Haha… let our slowness work for us!

                                Slow and steady not only wins the race, but lets one see if there even *is* a race to begin with!

                                    I prefer a livable continent.

                                    We already lack clean water, clean electricity and it's too damn hot and burning already.

                                    Build for need, not for "who has the longest Infantino"

                                          @HennaVirkkunen

                                          and where exactly in europe is any area even remotely suitable for a datacenter available, can supply the water (from dried out rivers?), and the necessary power (france who has to turn off nuclear power due to lack of cooling?)?

                                          which area WANTS a data center draining so much power equivalent to an country?

                                          nobody NEEDS and nobody WANTS the ecological and economic disaster of AI.

                                          come back with 30 billion for alternative energy and green computing first.
