Yeah. Genetic studies show domestication probably began at least 25K years ago. But there are some studies claiming it's closer to 50K.

In either case, given the timespans, there's a good chance humans and dogs co-evolved for each other. IOW, we adapted to them as much as they adapted to us and modern humanity as we know it wouldn't exist if we hadn't formed a partnership with them.

(Mine is lying on my feet because someone set off fireworks and made her anxious.)

@jackwilliambell @blogdiva Yeah, dogs have been around longer than agriculture, by most estimates - so the relationship there predates anything resembling 'civilization' as it's conceptualized by most humans, significantly predates history,
Like - by the time smilodons (sabre-tooth tigers) are finally extinct, humans and dogs have already been a thing for thousands of years.
It is an unfathomably ancient relationship.

Of course we don’t deserve them.

              Selective Breeding
              Health Problems
              • Flat-faced breeds → prone to severe breathing disorders
              • Large breeds → higher risk of joint dysplasia and mobility issues
              • Toy breeds → susceptible to dental crowding and periodontal disease
              • Certain purebreds → carry concentrated genes for heart disease
              • Extreme skull shapes → linked to painful neurological disorders

And yet it is called man’s best friend.
This is the greatest human hubris.

@jackwilliambell @miss_rodent @blogdiva Curious, the ways they've adapted to us, especially because of breeding, are obvious, but I wonder how we've adapted to them. I've lived with many dogs but am currently dog free, so have a complicated relation with them and don't feel in touch as I once did.
