The people who have spent centuries depicting Jesus Christ, a very real brown Palestinian Jew, as a blond haired blue eyed white guy, are upset that a film depicts Helen of Troy—a fictional person—as a Black woman

They are also upset that another film depicts Snape—also a fictional being—as a Black man
They are also upset that another film depicts the Little Mermaid—also a fictional being—as a Black girl
This is a just long way of them admitting how much they really hate Black & brown people.
@QasimRashid “real” lmao

I’m afraid I completely disagree with you here, and this has nothing to do with racism.
It’s wrong to generalize.
I think the casting of whoever it is is incredibly unfortunate in this film adaptation, just like in the ones before it.1/2

As a Greek woman, this hurts me deeply, but who cares about little Greece anyway? Big Hollywood has its own rules and doesn’t give a damn about little Greece and its millennia-old history and literature. Most people can’t really understand or even begin to feel much of what’s written there.
And that’s why I don’t even expect anyone here to understand this now.2/2

I have to admit I was utterly delighted to discover that the face that launched a thousand ships was Black. How can you possibly not have a mix of peoples in a Mediterranean story from antiquity?

You do know that Homer is myth, as in fiction? Or maybe you don't?
Yes, Homer (if he existed) wrote the founding myths of greekness. The Iliad and Odyssey are both very composed works of literature, meaning someone edited/wrote/redacted them, and one may as well call that person Homer.
But it's myth. It's not fact or history so what anyone looked like is totally up for grabs.
You are a racist.

Helen wasn't even human. She was born from an egg, laid by Leda (yeah, her husband was sort of greek-ish - there was no such thing as Greek at the time). Who knows where Leda came from and what skin colour she might have had?
Helen was fathered by Zeus - do you believe in Zeus? I don't, but if you do, why would his beautiful daughter not be black?
Because you're a racist

@QasimRashid @Susan_calvin they seem to have no problem with Odysseus being a WASP from Boston.

@QasimRashid Marvel's Thor in film, Heimdall as a Black man. Lost their minds. TV-style version of Interview with the Vampire, Black characters instead of white slave owners. Insanity. Fiction, which is the mind creating a thing that didn't exist, or interpreting a thing which did in a different way anyway, gone a different way slightly, puts some people out of their racist little brains.

@QasimRashid Another example was Rue in the Hunger Games. The color of her skin wasn’t even important to the story line, so everyone who lost their minds over the casting of a person of color were just showing their bigotry.

Look how Jehovah's Witnesses depict Jesus now: not so wrong, isn't it ?
