@IceWolf im in canada. that makes shit that might be a chinese honeypot more appealing...
@gildilinie haha honestly yeah
"oh no, chinese government spying!" well, it's better than the US government spying,
-
@gildilinie now the CIA I'd be concerned about, because we /are/ in the US and they'd apply to us...
but that probably doesn't matter as much if you're somewhere else!
Unless they just ship all their info off to your government, which might actually be pretty likely.

@IceWolf but honestly is the CIA gonna divulge the Master List and blow up their honeypot op to get me? maybe. i am transgender

@gildilinie haha good point...
I was thinking less "Master List" and more "regularly gives various governments info on /all/ their own citizens, and the other governments probably do the same back, to get around any and all "you can't spy on your own citizens that'd be blatantly dystopian" laws"
-

@IceWolf like we've seen this go down. The fbi built that anonymous phone provider for drug dealers and they used it to bust a bunch of organized crime. The problem is once you use it, the honeypot is burned
-

@gildilinie oh right, yeah, I somehow forgot the whole "using a specific honeypot, rather than their more general Wiretap Everything" thing
yeahh

@IceWolf so its highly unlikely they'd burn a honeypot to bust me on getting around the soccer game streaming block
-

@gildilinie Oh pff yeah, especially if you're just streaming (probably even torrenting) rather than Being Into EEEEVIL Stuff!! or criticizing the government or whatnot.

@IceWolf ill criticize the government with my legal signature on it
the only reason i stay pseudoanonymous on here is because i dont want some xtian seeing me make a joke about transgender boobs or some shit and calling my boss -

Yeah, it's not that bad in Canada right now fortunately... I really don't know about the US
most of the reason we're pseudonymous on here is pretty similar to yours, more about dirtspace people being weird/shitty about stuff than about oppression.
(well actually, the other big reason is that our legal name is not any of our actual names. hah. but y'know)
also the vore jokes/hornyposting :3

the only reason i stay pseudoanonymous on here is because i dont want some xtian seeing me make a joke about transgender boobs or some shit and calling my boss@IceWolf but vpns are pretty useful for a lot of mundane shit like, preventing facebook from tracking you (when combined with proper cookie hygene), torrenting bits, getting around age verification if that's happening your jurisdiction, blah blah
-

@gildilinie I didn't even think about facebook tracking and stuff!
We should probably start paying for a VPN again (we were on AirVPN for a while, switched from Mullvad because port forwarding, had no issues with AirVPN just didn't bother renewing).

@IceWolf ya its really funny if you're coming from a VPN IP instead of residential, with adblocking and cookie hygiene google won't serve you AI overviews. you're not worth the compute

@gildilinie wow huh! nice :V
also reddit straight-up blocks you if you use VPNs
when we used a VPN on Ikea's wifi to get around their ridiculous "you can't use anything that's not HTTPS, like say SSH" restrictions (another reason!), we couldn't load reddit pages at all
which kinda sucks for researching anything. reddit is hell but it's really hard to find actual people anywhere else from a web search these days...

@IceWolf don't worry, the chatbot makers also realized this, so they started leaning on reddit to feed data to chatbots super hard, then the scammers realized this, and the new field if AEO (ai experience optimization) was born... reddit is now full of spam meant to manipulate chatbots

@gildilinie yiiiikes
I wonder if we've run into that or not, Not sure how easy it is to tell.

So which VPN are we switching to?
mullvad: fash
Mozilla: resells mullvad
nym: fash
ExpressVPN/PIA: israeli military guys
Windscribe: openly transphobic on Twitter (someone here linked it), also sent out a newsletter with homophobic rape jokes like just the other day
ivpn: freeze peach https://mastodon.art/@jase/116830652868816205
proton: turned over logs on someone, one of the c-suite donated to Trump
surfshark/nordvpn: same company, owned by an SEO/marketing outfit
purevpn: sketchy af floods play store with different vpn brands, security problem
tortorguard.net: Cloudflare (the nazi proxi)
obscura: partnered with mullvadriseup: runs on donations
njalla: only one connection / no selection of exits / seems like a vps basically. Probably great if you want one fixed ip, won't work if you want to hop servers/regions
airvpn: ?
hide.me: ? did an NFT in 2022
xeoveo: says trans rights, oppose facism@gildilinie Very curious what people settle on here, I'd love to know what to recommend.

@gildilinie
Just want to express my thanks to you again for doing all this research on VPNs, Gildlinie!
