Woah. As a rule, when playing Cassandra, there exists a period of time between prophecy and happenstance. Almost always you have enough time to climb up a hill so you can be silhouetted against a thunderstorm saying "Why didn't you believe me? Too late now!"

Y'all I had time to make some rice. Like, seriously. I posted this, I went off and made dinner, and while helping Daughter pack got a ping about this article.

#Altman says #OpenAi Will Not #IPO this year, but it's not, really really not, because they're afraid to let their books be audited. Instead, it's totally because AI is so scawwwy! So scary, you guys! Did you see that guy who said Anthropic's #AI was going to kill us all, so...you should give us your money so our AI can save you from their AI.

    Sure, Jan.

@MissConstrue Bender's doomer / booster being opposite sides of the same coin sounds more & more accurate, and it started off sounded pretty smart.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell I tried to convince some friends to help me carry a whole tarred and feathered and rode out on a rail themed protest prop for the GOP Grindr Fest in Dallas.

I failed to take into account how heavy a railroad tie is. Subsequently how heavy a 6' 4x4 is...and we came to the conclusion that it was more than our contingent of Antifa Grannies could manage, but now we know, and we're building it from cardboard for the next time Ken Paxton shows his face.

A half scale nonfunctional model of a guillotine where the blade is made out of duct tape and foil of some kind works really well. It worked in Salem Oregon.

You know the whole #Coxon #Anthropic "We're all gonna die" thing? It's kinda looking like paid astroturfing. Marketing psyop to coincide with #Nvidia declaring that microchips are "long term investible assets". We are being played, y'all.

Jacob had almost zero footprint, wiped his X before the post, and had only been at Anthropic for a few months. Within a few minutes of the WSJ dropping the story, he does his announcement post on the twitters, and is instantly boosted by some of the biggest names in the AI field, which is not how organic engagement works for an account with no followers. His follower count goes up by hundreds of thousands, he gets media attention everywhere, and suddenly everyone is talking about LLM like it's a mind, and not a computer with an OFF switch.

At the same time, Nvidia hard launches the term "AI Factory" to rebrand datacenters and try and raise 500 billion dollars from your retirement fund.

I dunno gang, I think I'm calling shenanigans on this.

@budududuroiu I get that there isn't a big red button to power down a single box. But, for example, were an agent swarm detected, it is absolutely possible to shut down the origination. the phone-home locus, any number of other locations...etc. Would it be inconvenient? Certainly. It is possible? absolutely. In most places in the US, the grid can be shut off by street/block/address.

And if what you're saying is that they can somehow stay active state without power, then we have something we need to take outside and kill with fire.

(Full disclosure: Big fan of fire.) 😉

@MissConstrue yeah, I think I'm not as optimistic (anecdotally) about our collective capacity to do enough secops and monitoring on the open internet. We probably can kill it with fire, not so sure we're prepared to do it in time

@MissConstrue there's a protection-racket aspect to how #OpenAI has been conducting their business: they push into an existing systems, then fings break (as they do) and OpenAI is scheming to the be the guys who can lead them out of the labyrinth that they themselves created.

                    @MissConstrue
I remember pre-dotcom bubble that most sane folks thought there was a crash coming. They just didn't know when. IIRC the crash came almost a year later than I though it would happen.

Here we are at a moment that has been *screaming* imminent crash for almost two years.
But it keeps not happening. Is there something about everybody knowing a crash is coming that makes it so fintech bros can skirt an actual crash happening? The market just .. absorbs it somehow?

@collapse Someone just told me that Altman said OpenAI decided *not* to ipo this year. I haven't verified yet. If so...then this begins to look even more engineered...they are bleeding money, and the circular funding is about to dry up.

                                Sure, Jan.

Anyway, it’s a carefully constructed misdirection… “there’s a chance AI will kill us” is a much better story than “AI is _already_ killing us by burning carbon, polluting and stealing our water, and adding to the load of forever chemicals. Not to mention stealing all human knowledge and creative output to regurgitate it as slop.”

@MissConstrue I was wondering how Scam Altman was going to avoid the IPO given how badly Felon Musk's IPO went.

@ohmu It does not compute. It doesn’t. I’ve been following the market since the 1980s, and it has never made less sense.
