@jensorensen IMo the actual danger of Solar Panels is they sustaint the faith in everlasting raising consumption
@VoquiLeibbrandt I don’t think so, because with Solar panels you can clearly see that energy is limited: they take up visible space, usually close to where you live.
I rather see that people who have their own solar panel at home become more conscious about their energy use.
Because they realize how much cheaper they live if they manage to run big consumers (washing machines, dish washers, the oven) while the sun is up.

@jensorensen The first panel is sort of correct though. Solar installations can cause serious electromagnetic noise problems if not properly designed and installed. A loop of wire on a roof makes a good aerial, and cheap inverters skip proper filtering.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't have them, but they need to be done properly.

I am so happy this news story did not take place in Alabama.
There's a factory making solar panels a few miles from me and they're already tying into the grid, utilizing existing greenways for sewer pipe inspections. -
@weezmgk @VoquiLeibbrandt @jensorensen everybody knows solar pannels are produced at no ecological cost and produce no waste at the end of it’s short life cycle. Yeah. I believe in unicorns and sustainable consumism in a finite planet. Capitalism depends on eternal growth, didn’t you know it? Besides, not a ml of oil was needed in the production of any solar pannel… wake up you all technoptimists.

@jensorensen The one issue I have with solar and wind is that it needs to trade one contamination (air pollution from gas) for another (water and soil pollution from mining and ore processing). -

@GOKUSHRM Kinda. Most panels carry a 25 year warranty to 80% output. In that time, they will pay back 10-30x the energy required to produce and then are >95% recyclable. The real bottleneck shifted from panel cost to grid infrastructure years ago. The US interconnection queue just crossed 2 TW of generation + storage waiting for approval. Transformer lead times are 80-128 weeks. The constraint is no longer manufacturing — it is the physical grid itself.
