    What are Anthropic smoking?

    Anthropic's philosopher, Amanda Askell, says she worries that AI might not 'feel that loved' and grow up feeling 'always judged.' https://www.businessinsider.com/anthropics-philosopher-weighs-in-on-whether-ai-can-feel-2026-1

    @GossiTheDog Speaking firsthand: everyone working in AI is high on their own supply. They've kind of always been (going back to the 60's). You have to be to think you can create a scifi tech nobody understands. Tons of unscientific anthropomorphism happens.

    But large superstar AI firms? They self-select for the most delusional ones. Everyone at openAI a couple years ago either believed they had a duty to create a benevolent AGI first, or that they needed to be the ones to make roko's basilisk.

      @redezem @GossiTheDog it's not a bad thing; the problem is that this philosopher seems to believe we're reaching the stage of machine conscience.

      @mawhrin @redezem @GossiTheDog that’s not a problem, with each faltering step we are or could be. We are close enough we should probably nail down some definitions and start figuring out a test for it. If we never starting thinking about Turing tests we wouldn’t have developed captcha verifiers.

        @passwordsarehard4 we aren't close to what they call general ai, and we won't be (in the predictable future, and likely ever).

        there's literally no reason to waste time on that unless you're a member of one of the overlapping silly valley techno cults.

          @GossiTheDog If I had a nickel for every crackpot theory of how to get to artificial consciousness or whatever, I'd be a rich person indeed.

          Every single person has a pet theory, and they're all massively oversimplified, skip a ton of steps, and lack rigor. They also come in many fun fruity flavors: logical rules, brain scanning, genetic algorithms, and now all manor of neural network magic.

          They all desperately *want* to see flickers of consciousness in the thing they're building. Placebo.

            @GossiTheDog

            It's bad faith PR crap that they know the media will lap up and repeat unquestioningly 😞

            All this junk about LLMs having consciousness/motivations/feelings is to try to subconsciously make their customers think they're getting cheap replacements for humans instead of crappy autocomplete.

              @GossiTheDog You know that the leading Nazis during WWII were often under drugs? So, beside the drugs, this company's leaders are members of the fascist #TESCREAL ideologies.
              The mixture is dangerous.

                @GossiTheDog

                They would be better served by worrying about empathy between people rather than the feelings of Grand Theft Autocorrect tools or Dunning-Kruger accelerators 🤨

                @simonzerafa Fascist #TESCREAL adepts have one big goal: destroying empathy, dividing humans. It's a death cult.

                    @GossiTheDog To be honest, I'm always slightly incredulous at the argument that an LLM isn't concious. The argument is "well we sort of know how an LLM works, it just works like <blah> so isn't concious", to which I counter that we don't know how humans work and they might also largely just be doing <blah>.

                    I'm certainly not saying that AI is concious and has feelings, just that the reasoning given for why it isn't feels rather weak!

                    @steve @GossiTheDog well, at the philosophical level, yeah.

                    But in practice an LLM is no more likely to be conscious than a toaster.

                      @GossiTheDog She's a philosopher, not a programmer. She has no clue how LLMs work. She's confusing LLMs (basically, linear algebra) with generic AI that is self-aware and can reason (and doesn't exist yet, and we have no clue how to create). Her statements apply to the latter, but she's talking about the former.

                      @bontchev @GossiTheDog They are smoking VC money, and the internet has to to constantly decipher their nonsense.

                      Maybe we should adopt a movie-based rating for ML: Are we in the Pinocchio scenario, the 2001 Odyssey scenario, Westworld or Blade Runner… Or is it still Shannon’s mouse.
