It really makes you realise how much recency bias there is in most other systems, including most web forum software. Sometimes that’s useful (I don’t want obsolete solutions to be highlighted in preference to the ones that actually work), but it also makes writing there seem ephemeral. Here, a conversation can start up after two years of silence when someone comes up with something new to contribute. And that’s incredible.

@crittero @david_chisnall I'll never understand why that's a problem. If anything, it's a forum UI problem, add a thin, but prominent indicator between posts with a large gap that says something like "2 years later" and everybody knows what's up.

@david_chisnall well, yes, but I do feel the blogging style of information sharing is a net loss compared to what we had before.
I miss the old web where people would curate and structure information instead of today where everything is an unstructured stream of fragments.
It was hard work and therefore few people did it well, but it seems like around 2002-2005 almost everyone stopped trying.

@landelare @david_chisnall I'm just guessing, but I think necroposting rules are usually part of news-focused forums.
And since replying to a thread meant that the entire thread would show up as "Latest" in the list, people would get mad for basically reviving old news.

@crittero @david_chisnall I can't name a single forum I've ever visited where necroposting was allowed, and I've been around in the dialup era.
