Every time a newcomer posts an introduction and somebody tells them they shouldn’t have joined Mastodon.social and need to move to a different server, an angel loses their wings.
-
@DavidBridger See, this is why you had to leave the EU. We can't be having people wander round the Union saying Skon.
(I'm pretending not to remember that friends in Cork say Skon too.)
@CiaraNi The Irish half of my ancestors lived in Cork, so I'm doubly skonning.
-
@CiaraNi indeed this is not helpful. Especially if they do not ask for advice in that direction, like I cannot find people with my interest or from my region. And the answer should always be longer than hashtag, server.
On second thought maybe we should revive this Netiquette concept from the 1990s?
@prefec2 I was thinking about the cases when someone issues unsolicited instructions to newcomers who haven't asked for advice or asked any questions, who've just posted a friendly Hello, Mastodon! introduction. And yes, agreed, it is helpful to offer useful information if they do ask for help with something.
-
@CiaraNi *person takes a fairly substantial leap into the unknown by joining a niche community*
Person in community: "why didn't you go *more* niche?!"
@jsbarretto This situation exactly - it happens too often!
-
@CiaraNi @Wifiwits @DavidBridger often wondered if they pronounce it scone or scone in Scone.
@jbenjamint @CiaraNi @Wifiwits I believe they pronounce it skon.
-
@Primavera @CiaraNi @rgarner lol!
Once upon a time I used to work in a very fancy German delicatessen. They served loose tea and included a pretty little timer on the tray.
My English/British friends laughed an explained that you could easily tell of the steep was long enough by the stain on the rim of the cup ...
Same with my Japanese friends: they have vending machines selling cans of hot black tea with milk and sugar ("Royal milk tea") at every corner.
Tea culture my a...@bleistifterin @Primavera @rgarner 'Hot tea' from a vending machine can, oh my!

@bleistifterin @Primavera @rgarner 'Hot tea' from a vending machine can, oh my!
@CiaraNi @bleistifterin @Primavera <kettle sold separately>

@CiaraNi I’m on .social joined some time ago to figure what Fedi was about when I deleted my facebook. I have no complaints and quite like it. To be honest, been lazy to move to another instance and been meaning to search for another server for some time since there are so many cool servers out there

@vanzick It makes all the sense in the world for people to hop on to the .social train when they arrive at the station and see it there. The option to move later is there, if they get interested in that later. I am lucky that I like the first server I joined because I would not fancy moving - takes a bit of effort and you lose your posts and conversations when you move. And sure we can all chat across the different servers anyway.
-
@CiaraNi @lykkebrammer Exactly! I followed the procedure from Fedi.tips when I did my one and only move, years ago, and it worked just fine.
Everything transfers except your posts. Your followers, follows, bookmarks, lists, mutes, blocks and domain blocks will all come over.
I think it makes perfect sense to get a feel of the place, and the different instances, before considering a move (if you want to make one at all).
And welcome, @lykkebrammer! Glad to have you join us!
@jeridansky @lykkebrammer I didn't know that you take your Mutes and Blocks with you too. That's good, and good to know. Thanks!

@bleistifterin @Primavera @rgarner 'Hot tea' from a vending machine can, oh my!
-
@CiaraNi I went to the app store. Installed Mastodon and created an account and this is where I ended up. I don’t think the vast majority of users know they can join a different instance. I didn’t even think about it, I just installed the app.
@kintarian That is the way many people join - a natural way to move in to the Fediverse. And we can all chat across the different servers anyway.

@grb090423 @falcennial @CiaraNi @psneeze
It's scone as in cone
(North England)@AH_99 @grb090423 @falcennial @psneeze Yes! Scone as in Cone and Joan and Eoghan
-
@HighlandLawyer @psneeze I see your Sgonn and raise you a Scóna
-
@CiaraNi
I agree, it's not at all welcoming to greet people like this and smacks of self righteousness.
Loads of people join .social just because it's the first they come across. Folk can discover for themselves and move instance if they want to. The fact they're here on Mastodon should be welcomed.@Sarahw Agreed! Absolutely. It seems like gatekeeping to me. And rude, when they haven't asked for a stranger's advice about where and how they live in the Fediverse. As you say, they should just be welcomed.
-
@CiaraNi
A move to mastodon from other SMs is a big deal, I did research first before choosing (a geographical server) ... but new members, just let them settle in first. The take up of other SMs is because it's one click simple, it's not immediately obvious what the Fediverse is until you join...@AH_99 'It's not immediately obvious what the Fediverse is until you join' - an important observation. You need to be here, learning by doing, to work out the ups and downs of the place.
-
@Sarahw @CiaraNi @bleistifterin ^^this is the way. These are the ways? Anyway yes.
@rgarner @Sarahw @bleistifterin Yes! This and these and those are the ways.
-
@CiaraNi @Wifiwits @DavidBridger often wondered if they pronounce it scone or scone in Scone.
@jbenjamint @Wifiwits @DavidBridger I wonder that too, now
-
@CiaraNi Yes. And frankly no one has the right to impose purity tests. It's the Socials, not a religious community. It's a bit of fun and a way to communicate.
@TerryBTwo Agreed! It should be fun, enjoyable, a nice place to hang out, not a place to be lectured
-
@jbenjamint @CiaraNi @Wifiwits I believe they pronounce it skon.
@DavidBridger @jbenjamint @CiaraNi @Wifiwits I don't know how they pronounce scone in Scone, but I do know they pronounce Scone skoon
-
@CiaraNi
I know plenty of really decent folk on .social, it's a shame if people miss out on their input because they've blocked the largest server, just because it's big.@Sarahw Same here
