    @CiaraNi it will only get worse, mayhem is around the corner

    @Ox1de I wish that sounded like hyperbole, but given the way AI-use has been going, I fear it's not.

      @RalphBassfeld

      Use two spaces after a full stop, use Briticisms (such as "full stop" rather than "period"), and perhaps inject a gratuitous swear word. GenAI never does any of these things.

      @CppGuy @RalphBassfeld Good idea, but I fear it'd be an arms race. We change our behaviour as an evasive technique, then the machines get trained to do that thing too. I would think GAI can already handle regional varieties of language - I don't use it so I don't know for certain. If not now, soon, probably.

        @awws

        I can think of a few highly speculative motivations:

        • Some platforms enable users to monetise popular accounts
        • Some accounts gather lots of followers and then shift to posting other, more contentious material
        • Maybe this is a way of gathering information about large numbers of followers?
        • Maybe the person who prompted the AI thinks that these images are legitimate art and just wants to show them off without the stigma of slop
        • Maybe someone is angling for a job as a professional photographer but doesn't have a portfolio and wants to build one the easy way

        As I say, this is all just speculation.

        @CppGuy They are all plausible and likely scenarios.

        "Some accounts gather lots of followers and then shift to posting other, more contentious material" - this had never occurred to me. It sounds very possible, especially given right-wing digital strategies. Yikes.

          @CiaraNi @Amorpheus Yes, we have to, but the AI-fueled deceit is forcing us into a skepticism overload that can very easily make us cynical & suspicious.

          Just earlier today I had to verify this pic & honestly I'm still not entirely sure of it (see the thread) - but it's clearly the sort of thing where, before AI, I would not assume that anyone would go through the trouble of photoshopping it, so I would have just taken it at its pretty cool face value...

          @jwcph @Amorpheus Snap! I saw this image early and it felt 'off'. After a quick look, I moved on without interacting it. It felt like AI, it felt manipulated, but we can't be investigating every one. When in doubt now, I ignore and scroll on, muttering under by breath. (I only tooted about the 'water crown on bird' one because I saw it amid other toots where really good human photographers were being asked by unsure people if their real photos were AI. It was an awful contrast.)

            @CiaraNi Further illustration on how educational systems have been failing. This is especially poignant during more destabilized economies of scale.

              @CiaraNi Absolutely. This reminds me immediately of how certain politicians lie continually. They don't expect to be believed, necessarily: but they aim to break down trust; to make people think that *all* politicians lie continually; and then they come along with their answers to everything.

                        @NatureMC @monkee Regulation is needed. Right now, I'd settle for some universally accepted symbol like the ones for 'organic' or 'vegan' that marks a text or image as 'human-made'. Or perhaps the other way around, 'AI used', but that would probably get left out on purpose.

                              @NatureMC @VerenaRupp I honestly don't doubt that it is AI. But as the question kept coming, I want to confirm that I absolutely will correct myself if I was wrong. Nobody can tell how to 100% verify that an image was not manipulated. The proof will be disproof - if someone can share a verified, sourced link to the original real photo. Which nobody can.

                                  @CiaraNi Of course, as you know, the threat of AI is much more serious than fake bird photos. In the USA, right-wing groups are using deep fakes of nonexistent persons from various occupations and socioeconomic backgrounds to express support for antisocial politicians and their policies. Some have even called deep fakes a threat to civilization, because they keep us from knowing what is true and what is false. I would go even further and say the internet has facilitated the spread of disinformation and propaganda that harms most people in ways that were less common when we relied on curated news sources. On the whole, I think the internet is harmful.

                                      @CiaraNi Well, I did a little research for you (I don't have the software for a detailed one).
                                      I found the image only on social media, only on accounts I doubt.
                                      Some name a "photographer Lee Schofer" but I couldn't find any photographer with that name, neither a website of a nature photographer with this name. Seems LLM, too.

                                      But I found a *real* photographer/book author, Carl Bovis, showing the trick with AI here: https://x.com/CarlBovisNature/status/2046549710735905168

                                      You can find even more robin slop.
                                      It's 99,98% #AIslop.

                                      @NatureMC Ah, thank you! That seems very clear indeed. And I know the photographer Carl Bovis by name and quality of work - a trusted source. Exactly one of the kind of great photographers who probably gets asked if his images are AI, which is awful for him, and also awful for the people asking - they are only doing so because AI has damaged their usual trust.

                                        Actually there is.

                                        AI is a tool like others.

                                        Now the AI hype (centered on the USA) is an ugly scam, but luckily it seems to lose a bit steam. Or as I call it the times of free handouts from your drug dealer are coming to an end. Claude code has been dropped from pro, max users suddenly running out of quota. GitHub stopping signups and rumours that they want charge by the token.

                                        Three good times where the bullshit machines were free are coming to an end.

                                        @yacc143 @stveje I would love to think that were true, but I think the damage is deep and we've a way to go yet, alas.
