Now I know. It's genuinely unnerving in a manner I have never felt before while out in nature. Frankly. It was intimidating as hell.
Dog and I had an encounter with -I think- a single wolf a couple hundred meters from home.

@Pepijn What an experience. Such a vivid account too. Thanks for sharing this.

YOU'RE JUST A GLORIFIED POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODLE! GO AWAAAAAAAY!!!!!
(was the best I could think off, afterwards I realized RAAAAAAAAAAAAR would've been better)
The animal let out a quiet but weirdly audible low growl that fricking terrified me. No more steps towards us though.

As I kept on shouting and looking at the animal I backed away until the line of sight was broken.
Then I turned and walked away at a steady pace while looking towards the animals spot.
We soon hit the open fields and didn't see it again. Dog REALLY wanted to go home and pulled at the leash until we were inside.
I returned by bicycle and with more powerful flashlights to see if I could find the wolf. No luck.
Fricking terrifying. Do not recommend.
End of story.

@Pepijn Thou shalt not underestimate poodles. The ones @jkirkendall posts about have quite different vibes than your wolf though.

@Pepijn I am *so* envious! Sadly, we have no wolves in Scotland any longer.
@simon_brooke Not sure if you should be. It was honestly unnerving in a manner I don't remember having felt before.

@Petermid Wel met een fiets, dat voelt veiliger.. En ze vallen denk ik echt geen volwassen mensen aan.

@Pepijn cery unnerving!

@CuriousMagpie I have a physical copy here! I remember it as book that creates a lot of emotions. I'll add it to the to-read pile again.

Wolves are scary. We have them in our woods too, at least when we're not around they showed up on a camera feed, and it does make you reconsider a little bit if you want to have the kids playing freely out of sight.
To be clear, I also like having them in DK, but maybe not like right next to me.

@Pepijn was driving home last night and pulled over for a wee, and while I stood there, about a hundred feet down the road I saw what might have been a coyote but pretty sure was also a wolf.
It was slinking across the highway away from me, so I didn't really worry, but I had a similar kind of uneasy feeling. Are there more? Are they watching me?
Very familiar stretch of highway so I was totally comfortable before I saw it, but it was a definite reminder of who owns the friggin night.

@Pepijn this does put a bit of a damper on our idea to get sheep and have them graze in that area.

@simon_brooke Same here. If you haven't read it, you might enjoy Jim Crumley's "The Last Wolf". https://lastwolf.co.uk/the-last-wolf/ @Pepijn

Wow, I’ve been really afraid of wolves since I was little and, if I’m honest, not at all happy about them “returning”
great account though! -

@Pepijn I only saw one, last year, in daylight. And this year I learned that a lair nearby was poached and pups were taken/killed. We need more wolves, even if they scare the shit out of us. BTW, here's what @szarareneta recorded tonight (a few hundred kilometres away from my place) https://mastodon.social/@szarareneta/117526476122545880

@Szescstopni @Pepijn tbh I've been never afraid of the wolves even tho I meet them regularly. I am more afraid of the bears, boars, hunters and ticks

@Szescstopni @Pepijn and above all the worst are packs of wild dogs because they are not afraid of the humans

I think here in Denmark ticks are the ultimate apex predators.

@Pepijn Last winter, I heard two wolves howling in the middle of the night. It was so cool, but the sound also triggered that ”genuinely unnerving in a manner I have never felt before” response, as if it totally bypassed every bit of conscious human thought I’ve ever had and went straight to some primeval part of a human brain that actually belongs to a rather frightened prey animal.

@Pepijn Extremely cool, but also I am glad it wasn't me.

@Pepijn this has echoes to me of when I was hiking in a state park and realized I had just stepped between a feral hog sow and her piglets. I did not try to scare her off and very carefully backed away. Amazing experience, but also scary. Something I will cherish the memory of and maybe not want to repeat.
