Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.Hmm.. I have never touched *anything* from microsoft since ~1995.
I even dumped adobe in the late '90s, because I was so disgusted by their 'buy and kill'. Then they went subscription and I was incredulous that friends in pro-imaging stuck with them. Dump the buggers!

I'd also recommend pirating big-name software that you can't do without. You might have to use it, but you don't have to pay them.
The big thing I'm waiting for is an affordable phone with good connectivity that is completely free of Google/iOS. The options seem to be coming along, but they're moving slowly.

Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.@Ruth_Mottram Self-hosting is great, but does create risk of unrecoverable data loss in the event of a disaster such as a fire. I’m working with a few friends on E2EE backup to each other’s homes to mitigate that risk. We bought some lightly used enterprise-grade hard drives in a bulk surplus sale, and we’re each reserving each other a few terabytes for an encrypted volume, so each of us has our most important data replicated in three cities.
That and setting up periodic tests to remind ourselves of our backup encryption passphrases and to test our backups are the last barrier before we can ditch the mainstream cloud storage providers.

@snarklestiltzkin @Ruth_Mottram I looked at Proton due to the free plan, but realised I was going to need a paid plan due to my email storage. I then found Mailbox.org and went with them as similar cost but also green energy hosting. They also had a function that migrated all my emails for me.

I've recently set up an auto-reply on my Gmail, letting people know that this year I'm de-Googling, and so that email account will no longer be in use (and to let me know if they want my new email to keep in touch).
In my own way, getting there!

@clickhere @Ruth_Mottram That's a brilliant idea. A way of making changes at a manageable pace while also sharing the concept of switching off Big Tech.

I've recently set up an auto-reply on my Gmail, letting people know that this year I'm de-Googling, and so that email account will no longer be in use (and to let me know if they want my new email to keep in touch).
In my own way, getting there!
@clickhere @Ruth_Mottram @CiaraNi Even if it isn't feasible to totally deGoogle, my Google account has always been linked to a 3rd party email address, not a Gmail account. It's just my teeny way of not putting all my eggs in 1 basket!

I've also started using The Good Cloud (based on Next Cloud) for cloud storage.
After initial trials, I'm paying for each - we'll have to see whether I can keep that going.
But gradually trying to divest personal accounts and platforms; stuck with Microsoft, Google, and Zoom at work, though.

@CiaraNi @Des_egan @Ruth_Mottram No probs at all - they have a free trial thingamy, the UI is kinda basic (but it's all I need), and they're one of the hosted options/partners recommended by Nextcloud (I'm not in a position to self-host, so this takes care of that, if you get me).
