What's an AI camera?
I know traffic cameras and speed cameras, neitherof which use AI AFAIK...@drewph @palin they are probably cameras with superior resolution that may be used to surveil and issue fines based on more subjective criteria via AI.
In my state in Brazil, they've reported a ludicrous increase in fines for people driving without a seatbelt. An AI-equipped camera can determine if a driver is wearing a seatbelt, using a smartphone, or having other illegal behavior from the top of a totem pole.

@palin get yer goggles, our dystopian future has arrived.

Let's go...
@palin this is from 2023. London installed cameras to ticket people with vehicles that don't comply with emissions standards in certain "Ultra Low Emission Zones". protestors naturally started destroying them.
-
@LAG_Netzpolitik_BW @palin From what I've read this has nothing to do with AI, so mysterious-Substack-man might be conflating issues. I'm not sure without being able to read the source. The "Blade Runners" are taking down traffic enforcement cameras because they believe they represent "state overreach and punitive motoring taxes". Sure, AI may be used downstream with that data, but taking photos of license plates is probably the key gripe.

@palin fun. Yet the reality of active resistance is innovation on both sides. The enemy gets a vote.

@palin In Democract countries, we can say no. But we _all_ need to say no.
I think the politicians aren't listening to the people. Too many kick-backs involved, maybe?
It makes me want to go on a long walk with a battery powered 3 inch cutting wheel. I'm not ever running for office... who cares if I risk getting caught, right?
-
@LAG_Netzpolitik_BW @palin Its a few months old.
https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/ulez-activists-attacking-cameras-blade-runners-DWzXP4_2/
Its not "ai" cameras as such, simple automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and so traditional character recognition and it is used to enforce the Ultra Low Emissions Zone that is in place in London to reduce pollution and improve air-quality
If it were facial recognition I'd be all for this, but personally I like breathing clean air so don't really agree with the choice of targets, smacks of nimby-ism.
-
Let's go...
@palin they object to the cameras that enforce the charges on petrol and diesel vehicles. it's nothing to do with "Al".
thanks to those charges, statistics show deaths in London from air polution are down.

@palin now this is the kind of direct action the world needs. lol
-
@Li @slackline @LAG_Netzpolitik_BW @palin not better at doing, better at getting away with it. you could bring down MI6 on their entire operation with a single 'free palestine' sticker
-
Let's go...
No no no.
These cameras are not "ai", they're ANPR cameras used to enforce the ULEZ regulations which are there to limit the use of cars in order to reduce pollution.
These people are right-wingers who object to having their freedom to pollute limited. Absolutely nothing to celebrate. -
@Li @slackline @LAG_Netzpolitik_BW @palin Because if you have no concerns about the world as a whole (and know that your right to have an excessively polluting vehicle outweighs everyone else's right to breathe clean air) then you probably have no concerns about damaging property that ultimately everyone will have to pay to fix through taxes.

ULEZ cameras. They may or may not be "AI".
Their motivation seems more directed as the Mayor rather than protecting anyone's individual freedoms.
Be careful when ascribing motivations. This group has every sign of being racist climate denial rganf ather than freedom loving anarchists.
Hopefully I am incorrect, we would need more information to confirm or deny these impressions

-
Let's go...
@palin As several people have already pointed out, the whole "Blade Runner" thing was in response to ULEZ. Nothing "AI".
ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zones) is about stopping everyone else having to breathe in your car farts when it badly burns its dead dinosaur juice.
However, most details got lost in a far-right frenzy mixed in with the usual anti-Sadiq Khan rhetoric. Like the fact that your petrol car is probably older than 2009 if it isn't ULEZ compliant. And that there were / are scrappage schemes to help people upgrade vehicles. And that we're talking about London (and surrounding areas) that already have a better service of public transport - and that ULEZ funds go back into further investment into...
Or the fact that "Blade Runners" wouldn't just cut down the cameras, but often the whole traffic light that the camera sat on top of... so pedestrians and other road users were at risk because they've screwed up traffic safety equipment.
But please, do continue to praise right-wing thugs that eventually got bored of this and then moved on to rioting outside migrant hostels and pinning up union flags everywhere.
