@neil can I buy one that *can’t* make and receive calls. That may be useful.

@revk @neil I don't think so, but if you set it up with an internet-only SIM you wouldn't be getting any.

      FWIW, I run @GrapheneOS on a Pixel.

This will be my third GrapheneOS device.

A genuinely excellent Android experience, with many years of support and security updates.

      @neil @GrapheneOS

Seconding Graphene, running it on my P10 Pro XL. Fantastic OS and great peace of mind 🤘

2001: I have a new phone. How exciting! Perhaps I can access the Internet on it via a Sharp Zaurus. This is so the future!

2002: Ooh! A new PalmOS device! Amazing! HotSync backup and off we go!

2004: Wow! This WindowsMobile device has a keyboard, as is basically a mini laptop. Cool!

        ...

2026: I must get a new black slab because security updates have run out on my current black slab which, for all other intents and purposes, is absolutely fine. The new black slab does nothing new for me, and all I see is the chore of setting it up.

@neil I have only the second smartphone in my life, and it's quite "old" now. I'll keep it until it breaks. Environment is an important point for me. For security, I use my fix line. 😁 I know. 😎
Perhaps, I wrote some too much about mining of rare earths? Or I'm fallen out of time?

@dank I have had problems with banks not liking it (which is daft, given its security focus), but everything else has been fine.

          YMMV, of course!

@neil yep, the major blocker for me is authenticator apps like okta and google. i really don't want to have and maintain multiple phones so if i can't use it as MFA for work and personal, it's a showstopper

A new device would be in the state the manufacturer most intends it to be in. Even if you install GOS minutes into its ownership, boom, not new.

@dank Yes, this might come down to specific requirements. I use a YubiKey (WebAuthn and TOTP) and Bitwarden (passkeys and TOTP), and those are fine, but others I don't know!

What a strange post. Are you feeling okay?

I'm upgrading from a device running GrapheneOS, which has come to the end of its five years of security updates.

I am upgrading to another device running GrapheneOS, which should offer seven years of updates.

I don't need new features, but I do want the security updates.

Then why don't you post this in your post, genius? But, of course, my post still stands correct. You still finance big corps because Graphene's VERY limited choice of supported hardware. You still can't easily replace parts. And you still have a phone built with blood minerals.

My last phone was a OnePlus 5T. It was released 9 years ago. It had 8 cores, including 4 high-performance 2.45GHz ones, 8 GiB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. It is massively overpowered for everything I use it for. Apparently the last LineageOS version to run on it was Android 15. I think that still gets security updates but is no longer the latest release.

I’d still be using it if I hadn’t accidentally put it through the washer-dryer. I replaced it with a 9 Pro, which is now over 5 years old and runs the latest Android via LineageOS.

The 5T stopped getting official updates with the stock firmware around 2020. The 9P Pro’s last official update was in 2023.

The fact that a group of volunteers can maintain updates for years after the vendor stops makes it very obvious that this is an intentional choice by the vendor. I hope that the labelling requirements in the CRA will start to disincentivise this behaviour.

And if google treated GOS equally to its own software, I might also hold that view. What I see from them is more of a tenuous tolerance.

Yeah. I have zero enthusiasm for the point when my current phone is too old to support something I have to have - because of the time lost to setting up the next, because I'm sure the next will fail to run something I also like, and because so few of them have headphone sockets any more.

Advancement like this is more like deterioration.

@neil I will soon have to update my pixel 6 (because of the security update running out).
I have already replaced the battery and the camera has a mark on the lens (not sure what)

5.5 years, maybe 6 makes me look like a sustainability here when compared to my friends and colleagues

I have the feeling though that the battery life is degrading way faster this time around. Not sure if it is due to enshitification of the OS with stuff I don't sure or something else

@jfparis @neil in the absence of programmed obsolescence, the typical lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries in mobile phones will degrade more slowly if the charge is usually kept between 40-60%. Always try to charge before they reach 0% and don't leave then plugged in at 100% for days. There's much more detailed information here. https://www.batteryuniversity.com/articles/

@neil tbf many black slabs must be replaced not for lack of security updates but simply due to the battery dying and not being user replaceable

@neil COUNTERPOINT: when I bought my new black slab last year, I was able to get it in a very pretty colour and have added an even prettier case

@neil that's why there is a market for brands like #Fairphone. Although I'm afraid that most people need an excuse to get a new shiny black slab every two years.

@NaN @neil me too, though they also run out of security updates after about 7 years, so having to go through the upgrade path.

@smsm1 @neil they're offering longer for the newer models too, which feels like going in the right direction
