    @EUCommission great step forward, even if the USB-C standard is a hot mess of many incompatible things and with most cables not labeled at all.

        @EUCommission
        The best about this all is, that this implies the madatory introduction of USB PD 3.1 with supply of up to 48V and up to 5A which means 240W.
        So also for powerful CAD and Gaming Laptops.

        Great!

          "Also none of my USB-C chargers or PC USB-C port will charge one USB-C device I have, only a USB-A port on PC or charger works."

          My conventional USB-A Chargers still charge my latest mobile, but not in quick charge.
          Which is sufficient for radios, headsets ans such stuff. It also preserves the akku with slow charging overnight.
          The bad thing about cables is that there is othen rather shown the data rate but not the power it is able to carry.

            @EUCommission you forgot to standardise cables. USB C is already a major downgrade in end-user UX compared to the situation before. 🤬

              I think it is not required to have USB-C on both ends of the laptop.

                @derbruesseler @EUCommission cause this is for new devices lol

                Also since USB-C became standard I no longer have to worry about not being able to charge my stuff in certain situations, or take multiple chargers with me unless I wanna charge my 3DS or something

                I can just charge my phone, laptop, Steam Deck, etc with the same charger and that's just neat

                @hazelnot I still have devices that need a USB-A to USB-C cable, and I still end up using different chargers. And as for 'less electronic waste': what about all those chargers that became obsolete because of the new directive? Ever thought about that? // @EUCommission

                        Impossible to buy a full USB-C cable in local shops. They are all only wired for USB-2, so no USB-DP, some USB charging modes don't work and no USB-3 speeds.

                        Also none of my USB-C chargers or PC USB-C port will charge one USB-C device I have, only a USB-A port on PC or charger works.

                        Some laptop need more than 20W (typical chargers are only 10W!). Some need more than the 100W (high power).
                        All laptops > 20W should have also a dedicated charge port.

                        @raymaccarthy @mmalc @EUCommission @jnfingerle, hah, yes. I'd buy a cable (at need) from the local $supermarket but the labelling is entirely whether they're A to C, A to that weird Apple one, or C to C (or occasionally A to one of the type B variants).

                        If I want a cable purely for charging, these might be adequate; but I want data transfer too, and I won't buy those ones because the necessary labelling is completely missing.

                            @EUCommission yeah fuck that shit. Thanks for creating tons more e-waste; I love having to throw out all my perfectly fine pre-existing cables and buy new ones for any new device I buy, not to mention the ton of A-to-C adapters I've been forced to accumulate.

                              @EUCommission I love being unable to tell if a cable carries data, audio, video, 2.5W power, or 240W power! What could possibly go wrong by making all cables ambiguous and impossible to tell apart?

                                @hazelnot @derbruesseler @EUCommission I suspect he wants EC to confiscate his older devices and cables.
                                Maybe with enough posts online EC can have a special law in this case.

                                  @derbruesseler @hazelnot @EUCommission So what? Did you think old cables would evaporate when a new interface standard was mandated?

                                  You do realize that some vendors made cables proprietary specifically to make more money and not for any functional reason? This nonsense is now somewhat constrained. Many of us can already use one cable for charging multiple devices and enjoy not having to round up a variety when travelling.

                                    @EUCommission

                                    It's not one cable. It's a mess of many incompatible cables that now all look the same.

                                      I believe that that's exactly the idea. Same way that phones, at least in Europe, no longer comes with chargers

                                        Starting today, USB-C is the mandatory charging standard for all laptops sold in the EU.
