@thedoctor keep asking our governing bodies to change that (there are EU alternatives and initiatives, many coming soon, some already in place).
@joeress -
@thedoctor we do what we can, can't ask for more.
I was thinking about WERO. There are solutions under the BANCOMAT, Bizum and MB Way (Spain, Italy and Portugal) apps, but they still require a Visa or Mastercard card (for bank account validation and online payments/temporary credit card creation and management), there are cross-border transfers without the card flag already, and in-shop and online payments (through the system, not the Visa/Mastercard cards) are next (coming early 2027 according to a proof-of-concept from April 2026). In Northern Europe there are banks that issue cards that aren't from either Visa or Mastercard, but those are all from Norway and Denmark AFAIK.

@joeress I can't see the FCA allowing this to be a thing in the UK. I just checked, and what Visa Payments Ltd are not allowed to do is exactly this...

@joeress lol these guys obviously haven’t seen the experiments. Eg when the AI ceo bought toilet seat covers for its staff and sold them when it was short on cash
@DerickNose @joeress The AI CEO sold the staff? That sounds about right

In the EU we are steering off the "cards" for direct payment systems like BLIK.Edit: take my sincere apologies for not sensing the slop under the link I gave. My bad

@joeress I remember the day when it was just your small children who could bankrupt you buying microtransactions on electronic devices.
I guess tech writers can brush off those old articles and quotes for a new round of "Woe is me, the surprise $$$$ bill for this Location_Name Parent_Name" articles. -

@ohir had heard of BLIK, but only for Poland. We should still issue European cards (now that I think of it, there were credit/fractioned payment cards in my country, Portugal, that weren't from Visa or Mastercard, their usage was just more limited to select shops, now they changed mostly to Mastercard, you can use them anywhere but the discounts/offers are still limited to certain shops...).
